The war in Iraq put blogs in the public spotlight, but it also has given the blogosphere its first real scandal -- a scandal that is provoking a new debate among bloggers about what ethics, if any, apply to their medium.

Looting is a sign of freedom, allies insist


BRITAIN and America stood aside last night as murder and looting plunged Baghdad and other main cities into new levels of anarchy.

Gunmen and thieves ransacked hospitals, hijacked cars and engaged in bloodletting, often in full view of coalition troops. The northern city of Mosul witnessed scenes of mayhem as Saddam’s troops melted away and the population had an orgy of looting.

China, Iran and U.S. Top Executioners, Amnesty Says


At least 1,526 people were executed worldwide last year, with 80 percent of all known executions carried out in China, Iran and the United States, Amnesty International said on Friday.

The London-based human rights group also expressed concern that U.S. military tribunals which will prosecute "terrorist" suspects will have the power to impose death sentences which cannot be appealed.

Trap-happy pot growers targeted


The Canadian government says it is stiffening penalties for marijuana growers who set traps designed to injure or kill law enforcement officials and emergency workers.

Justice Minister Martin Cauchon also said on Friday Ottawa was still looking at ways of decriminalising marijuana -- an idea that causes deep concern in the United States -- and hoped to make its intentions clear by the end of June.

Radio 'raps' Saddam Hussein


A radio station thought to be backed by the CIA has been broadcasting a gangsta rap-style parody of Saddam Hussein to Iraq.

The radio has a Saddam impersonator in its comic slot rapping out a message in English and Arabic to the tune of Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise.

The birds' talent for storing undigested food in their stomachs for up to three weeks is unique among higher vertebrates. This ensures a constant supply of fresh food for their chicks - but how the penguins do it has been a mystery.

Haiti has officially recognized voodoo as a religion, allowing voodoo practitioners to perform ceremonies from baptisms to marriages with legal authority.
