Russia denies Baghdad embassy sheltering Saddam


Russia denied Arab and Western media reports that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was sheltering in the compound of its embassy in Baghdad.

"This type of statement is not in any way true," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko told Russian state television.

SADDAM TOPPLED


Saddam Hussein's hated regime was ended today as hundreds of jubilant Iraqis hauled down a statue of their former dictator.

The Iraqis, with some help from US Marines, wrecked the bronze and marble statue of Saddam in the centre of Baghdad.

Drunk jumbos chasing pregnant women


FEARING attacks by wild elephants, pregnant women of east Indian state of Jharkhand are climbing trees to give birth to their babies. In the past two months, in the district of Dumka, at least a dozen pregnant women have delivered their babies on platforms built on treetops.

World's Tallest to Have World's Fastest


Taiwan will not only be able to boast of being home to the world's tallest skyscraper later this year, but the fastest elevators as well. Taipei 101 -- a 1,667-foot tower of steel, glass and concrete due to be completed in Taipei in October 2003 -- will have elevators that can lift passengers one kilometer a minute, project managers said on Tuesday.

California medical marijuana user claiming refugee status


Steve Kubby told his refugee hearing he needs about 5.5 kilograms of marijuana a year to control symptoms of a rare adrenal cancer. The former California man has Health Canada permission to grow and use pot.

Baghdad government doesn't show up for work today


Iraqis asked on Wednesday who was running their country after U.S. forces swept almost unchallenged through northeastern Baghdad toward the heart of the capital and cheering looters sacked shops and offices.

There was no sign of police or government authority on the streets of central Baghdad.

Ballmer feilscht: Windows statt Linux für München?


Die bayerische Landeshauptstadt erwägt seit längerem einen Komplett-Umstieg von Windows auf Linux. Das macht Microsoft nervös: Steve Ballmer kam jetzt höchstpersönlich nach München, um dort mit OB Christian Ude zu verhandeln.

Das berichtet heute die Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ). Aus Angst vor der Signalwirkung eines Münchner Linux-Umstiegs auf andere Kommunen habe Ballmer extra seinen Ski-Urlaub unterbrochen, um den Münchner Oberbürgermeister persönlich eines Besseren zu überzeugen.
