Microsoft Buys Linux


At a small press conference in Nepal, attended by two Sherpas and a Yak, as well as a THG stringer, Microsoft spokeswoman Avril Wonful announced that the Redmond company had acquired Linux. Although this surreptitious attempt by Microsoft to kill the Open Source community was supposed to go unnoticed, THG sources had long known that Microsoft executives were holed up in a Buddhist monastery in the area, meditating and trying to achieve greater self-awareness.

U.S. plane slips off aircraft carrier during landing


Anti-submarine airplane malfunctions; crew rescued

ABOARD THE USS CONSTELLATION (AP) — A plane veered off the USS Constellation's flight deck and slipped into the water after landing early today. The two pilots ejected into the water and were rescued by helicopter.

Website Hoax on Killer Virus Triggers Hong Kong Panic


A teenager's Web Site hoax about the killer virus sweeping Hong Kong sparked panic food buying and hit financial markets on Tuesday, and the government said it was placing more than 200 people into isolation camps.

Jordan Foils Two Iraqi Terror Plots


Authorities have foiled two recent Iraqi terror plots, including one by Iraqi diplomats allegedly planning to contaminate water supplies to Jordanian and U.S. troops on Jordan's desert border with Iraq, diplomats said Tuesday.

The second one - in which four Iraqis were arrested last week - allegedly involved a plot to bomb a luxury hotel frequented by Americans and other Westerners, including about 70 journalists, the diplomats said on condition of anonymity.

US Forces Enter Red Zone


American forces have clashed with troops from Iraq's elite Republican Guard in fierce fighting 50 miles from Baghdad, according to reports.Fox News said some units had crossed into the so-called 'red zone' surrounding the city, pointing to a drive on the Iraqi capital.

The zone refers to an area around Baghdad, in which Saddam Hussein is reported to have authorised his generals to use chemical weapons.

Shock tactics for anti-social mobile use


Anti-social mobile phone users could be punished with an electric shock if prototypes from a design company go into production.

The increasing irritation of inappropriate or noisy conversations in public places prompted design firm Ideo to come up with handsets that would encourage people to be more tactful in their phone use.
