Watch How Casually False Claims are Published: New York Times and Nicholas Lemann Edition

Like most people, I’ve long known that factual falsehoods are routinely published in major media outlets. But as I’ve pointed out before, nothing makes you internalize just how often it really happens, how completely their editorial standards so often fail, like being personally involved in a story that receives substantial media coverage. I cannot count how many times I’ve read or heard claims from major media outlets about the Snowden story that I knew, from first-hand knowledge, were a total fabrication. We have a perfect example of how this happens from the New York Times today, in a book review by Nicholas Lemann, the Pulitzer-Moore professor of journalism at Columbia University as well as a long-time staff writer for The New Yorker. Lemann is reviewing a new book by Edward J. Epstein – the long-time neocon, right-wing Cold Warrior, WSJ op-ed page writer and Breitbart contributor – which basically claims Snowden is a Russian spy.

Norwegians are about to lose their FM radio and they’re not happy about it

In just a matter of weeks, Norway will tune out FM radio for good and become the world's first country to switch over to digital-only transmissions. Norway's government has decided that the nation's FM airwaves will fall silent from January 11, 2017, starting in Nordland and gradually moving south.

After nearly a century of the analogue system, which revolutionised music listening with high-fidelity stereo sound compared to mono AM transmissions, the changeover to Digital Audio Broadcasting's advanced version (DAB+) will render the country's almost eight million radio sets obsolete.

Dances of the Planets

The planets in the heavens move in exquisite orbital patterns, dancing to the Music of the Cosmos. There is more mathematical and geometric harmony than we realize. The idea for this article is from a book Larry Pesavento shared with me. The book, 'A Little Book of Coincidence' by John Martineau, illustrates the orbital patterns and several of their geometrical relationships. . Take the orbits of any two planets and draw a line between the two planet positions every few days. Because the inner planet orbits faster than the outer planet, interesting patterns evolve. Each planetary pairing has its own unique dance rhythm. For example, the Earth-Venus dance returns to the original starting position after eight Earth years. Eight Earth years equals thirteen Venus years. Note that 8 and 13 are members of the Fibonacci number series. Earth: 8 years * 365.256 days/year = 2,922.05 days Venus: 13 years * 224.701 days/year = 2,921.11 days (ie. 99.9%) Watching the Earth-Venus dance for eight years creates this beautiful five-petal flower with the Sun at the center. (5 is another Fibonacci number.)

Deutsche Bank: World's most dangerous bank?

Deutsche Bank shares hit a new record low today. Its value has halved since the beginning of the year. So is it now the most dangerous bank in the world? According to the International Monetary Fund - yes. Last week, the IMF said that, of the banks big enough to bring the financial system crashing down, Deutsche Bank was the riskiest. Not only that, Deutsche Bank's US unit was one of only two of 33 big banks to fail tests of financial strength set by the US central bank earlier this year. It's not hard to get scared when you look at a few numbers. Bear with me.

Kamikaze Taube

Journalistic Standards at the Guardian

Perhaps they will be able to induce individuals to give £10 a month, £120 will buy Polly Toynbee one lunch at the Ivy. But apart from the ethics of asking ordinary people to fund some of the most overpaid people in the country, there are questions about the claims which Viner makes. She talks of Guardian journalism as “well-sourced”, “calm”, “intelligent”, “in-depth”, “thoughtful” and “well-resourced.”

Secret bankers be warned: "Panama Papers" were the first shots of a "Helvetian War."

Here's a long one -- a major posting about the coming war that no one seems to have on their scopes or horizons. Although this scenario was loosely described in fiction, it may take the world's powers by surprise. And it will not need their permission. A few small nations could decide on this desperate course, tomorrow. Let's start with last month's headlines -- and hence "old news." The spill of confidential records from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca & Co., was called “the Wikileaks of the mega-rich.” Despite revealing only the tip of a very-dirty iceberg, the Panama Papers shine light upon a vast network of powerful people around the world who use shell corporations and secret, offshore accounts to dodge taxes, or evade sanctions, or to launder money. Mossack Fonseca is one of the leading creators of shell companies, according to the Center for Public Integrity. Released files include data on 214,488 "offshore entities" involving individuals in 200 countries and territories.
