Graphing Earthquake and Radiation Data in Japan

These graphs of Earthquake and Radiation Data in Japan are made from various data sources which are quoted below and underneath each image. I made these as quite a few people are getting confused with all the numbers floating around and to show in an easily viewable format the levels that are being stated.

The Radiation Graphs are made from data from mobile monitoring posts setup by the Prefectural Offices (Local Council / Local Government) in the areas. I am focusing on these as they are only in Japanese and provide a different view on the MEXT data that everyone else is graphing.

Containing the radiation

A Japanese government spokesman has pledged all-out efforts to contain high-level radiation at the damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano spoke to reporters on Monday as efforts continued to remove highly radioactive water from buildings at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Japan trying to remove highly radioactive water at troubled nuke plant

Work to remove highly radioactive water from inside buildings at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi plant continued Monday, with the radiation level of a pool in the basement of the No. 2 reactor's turbine building measured at more than 1,000 millisieverts per hour.

Removal of such water in four reactor units is necessary to reduce the risk of more workers being exposed to radioactive substances, as the risk hinders efforts to restore the plant's crippled cooling functions, which are crucial to overcoming the crisis.

Fukushima: "Teilweise Kernschmelze" in Reaktor 2

In vier Reaktoren steht verstrahltes Wasser

Extreme radiation detected at No.2 reactor

Tokyo Electric Power Company says it has detected radioactive materials 10-million-times normal levels in water at the No.2 reactor complex of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

The plant operator, known as TEPCO, says it measured 2.9-billion becquerels of radiation per one cubic centimeter of water from the basement of the turbine building attached to the Number 2 reactor.

Radiation detector, help needed!

Can open hardware community do something to help in this? Seeed Studio is now sourcing sensors, then assemble quick measurement tools, ship as many/fast as possible to Japan.

Since we have no previous experience with such device, your help is needed!

The comments to the blog article by @seeedstudio about Geiger counter is really interesting.

Graphic: How deadly is the radiation from Japan?

Yesterday I wrote a piece for The Japan Times about a couple of people who were helping make all the confusing radiation data a little less confusing. In that piece I mentioned @eroninjapan’s effort of visualizing the data using Tableau Public, a pretty slick data-viz software. Since then, Ross Perez from the Tableau team has been in touch to pass along another rendering of the MEXT radiation data.

Japan geigermap: at-a-glance

This map visualises crowd-sourced geiger counter readings from across Japan.

Click on the circles to get more information on the readings in each area.

These readings are aggregated by Pachube here.

Measurements are represented in units of microsieverts per hour ( µSv / h). Original readings used the unit nGy/h and I take the approximation 1 Gy = 1 Sv. (See the Wikipedia entry on Sieverts)
