Ultrasound machine 'turns cheap plonk into fine wine in 30 minutes'

Inventor Casey Jones says the £350 gadget uses ultrasound technology to recreate the effects of decades of ageing by colliding alcohol molecules inside the bottle.

The Ultrasonic Wine Ager, which looks like an ordinary ice bucket, takes 30 minutes to work and has already been given the thumbs up by an English winemaker.

Mr Jones, 53, said: "This machine can take your run-of-the-mill £3.99 bottle of plonk and turn it into a finest bottle of vintage tasting like it costs hundreds.

Spain sweats amid 'water wars'

Spain is experiencing its worst drought in 40 years. Climate experts warn that the country is suffering badly from the impact of climate change and that the Sahara is slowly creeping north - into the Spanish mainland.

Yet in Spain itself there is little consensus about what is to be done. Indeed, such is the disagreement that journalists and politicians alike are calling it "water wars".

World’s oldest chocolate found at Paso de la Amada in Mexico

Chemical traces from an ancient pottery vessel from southeastern Mexico showed that it had been used for a chocolate beverage more than 3,500 years ago, produced in the region which the Aztecs conquered for its rich orchards of cacao trees.

Although cacao (or cocoa) beans are grown today in many parts of the world, the tree which bears the seed pods, Theobroma cacao, is native to southern Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. The Spanish conquistadors remarked that a drink made from the toasted and ground beans, whisked, frothed and flavoured with hot chilli peppers, was consumed by the elite of the Aztec Empire. Other parts of the pod, including its soft inner pith, were fermented into various beverages.

Department of Water and Power drops 400,000 balls onto Ivanhoe Reservoir

The water needs to be shaded because when sunlight mixes with the bromide and chlorine in Ivanhoe's water, the carcinogen bromate forms, said Pankaj Parekh, DWP's director for water quality compliance. Bromide is naturally present in groundwater and chlorine is used to kill bacteria, he said, but sunlight is the final ingredient in the potentially harmful mix.

The DWP drop was designed to stop the three from mingling in the 10-acre, 58-million-gallon Ivanhoe Reservoir. The 102-year-old facility serves about 600,000 customers downtown and in South Los Angeles.

BLUE - und das Obst bleibt länger frisch

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone out and bought fresh fruit, only to have it mold by sitting in my refrigerator’s crisper drawer. It’s both a waste of food and money and can be quite frustrating at times. This is where BLUE enters the picture.
