'Fiendish' Trojan pickpockets eBay users


Miscreants have unleashed a new strain of a sophisticated Trojan that targets eBay users by feeding them spoofed web pages containing fraudulent information about high-ticket purchases, The Register has learned. It has already contributed to an $8,600 loss by one eBay member.

eBay boots off Skype rival


eBay, still smarting from Monday's $1.43bn admission of Skype's failure, last night deleted auctions that carried click-to-call buttons for VoIP rival Jajah.

Jajah released its embeddable buttons last week, and decided to take the provocative step of promoting a special version for eBay auctions. Businessweek claimed there had been a deal between the two to approve the buttons, but no such talks occurred.

Ebay cuts back its value of Skype


EBay has conceded that it paid too much for internet telephone service Skype - dramatically writing down the value of its investment.

The online auction firm said it would take charges of $1.43bn (£699.5m) on the 2005 purchase, when it paid $2.6bn for the business.

Someone tries to sell Belgium on eBay


Hidden among the porcelain fox hounds and Burberry tablecloths on sale at eBay.be this week was an unusual item: "For Sale: Belgium, a Kingdom in three parts ... free premium: the king and his court (costs not included)."

The odd ad was posted by one disgruntled Belgian in protest at his country's political crisis which reached a 100-day landmark Tuesday with no end in sight to the squabbling between Flemish and Walloon politicians.

eBay pirates plead guilty to selling $6m software for pennies


Two Americans pleaded guilty today to selling $6m worth of counterfeit software over eBay.

In 2003 and 2004 Robert Koster of Jonesboro, Arkansas auctioned more than $5m worth of counterfeit factory management software from Rockwell Automation, for a personal profit of $23,000. Also in 2003 and 2004 Yutaka Yamamoto of Pico Rivera, California auctioned $543,000 worth of Rockwell Automation software on eBay for a net gain of $6,000. Once again, eBay lives up to its reputation as a great place to get a bargain
