Burma monks march as police act

Several thousand Burmese monks and other protesters have begun a new march in Rangoon despite a baton charge by police at the city's holiest shrine.

Police charged the crowd outside the Shwedagon Pagoda as demonstrators met for a ninth day of marching and warning shots were fired at another site.

US Army funds hydrogen-fuelled drone aircraft

Fuelled by a seemingly inexhaustible stream of federal military/security research cash, the US flying-robot industry seems to produce fresh wonders every day.

We've seen Terminator-esque Flying HKs, droid gunships, and self-piloting special-forces whisper-copters.

Today's robot-related news reveals yet another new twist: the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command has put $6.2m into the "Orion" High Altitude, Long Loiter (HALL) aircraft. The Orion's special sauce is its hydrogen-powered engine, which gives it the ability to operate at 65,000 feet - some 12 miles up - and stay there for better than four days.

Saved by the bomb

Satirical opinion piece from ex-Python Terry Jones. Worth reading for the reader's comments.

Not safe for Americans.

"Campaigning in Oklahoma the other day, the Republican senator John McCain was asked what should be done about Iran. He responded by singing, "Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb Iran", to the tune of the Beach Boys' Barbara Ann. (Join the hilarity and see for yourself on YouTube.) How can any thinking person disagree? I mean, any country with a president who doesn't shave properly and never wears a tie deserves what's coming to it - a lot of American bombs, with a few British ones thrown in to ensure we don't miss out on the ensuing upsurge in terrorism."

Who Killed Cryptome.org?

It's the one secret radical open information activist John Young can't crack: what drove his ISP, Verio/NTT, to finally pull the plug on his website, Cryptome.org, where for years he's posted every sensitive document, photo or map he could get his hands on.

Young -- a 72-year-old architect in New York -- has hosted countless government documents with the "For Official Use Only" markings intact; exposed the names of long-ago CIA collaborators; the alleged identities of current British intelligence agents; compiled a travelogue-style guide to the Pennsylvania mountain believed to be the vice president's "undisclosed location"; and even put up a map showing where major Manhattan gas pipelines are buried, which he posted ahead of the Republican National Convention in New York.
