Libya accepts U.N. resolution for immediate ceasefire, decides to halt all military action
Libya's foreign minister: "Libya, after having seen the resolution, would like to explain the following.
As the country will try to deal with this resolution. Libya now has knowledge of this resolution, and according to article 25 of the UN charter, and taking into consideration that Libya is a full member of the UN, we accept that it is obliged to accept the security council resolution.
Therefore, Libya has decided an immediate ceasefire, and the stoppage of all military operations.
Libya takes great interest in protecting all civilians, and offering them all necessary humanitarian aid, and respecting all human rights, and obliging to the international and humanitarian laws and it is also obliged to protect all of the foreigners in Libya and protecting their assets.
In doing so, Libya is in accordance with the resolutions of the security council and the articles of the charter of the United Nations.
We emphasise in the resolution 1973 for the year 2011, we emphasise and agree to the article regarding the protection of civilians and the territorial unity of Libya.
"And therefore, building on this, we are opening all dialogue channels with everyone interested in the territorial unity of Libya.
"And my country is very serious about continuing the development, economic, political, humanitarian and social development of the Libyan nation.
"And we have indeed taken serious steps in continuing this development for the good of the Libyan people. And we believe that this will take the country back to safety and security for all Libyans.
"We also express our sadness towards what the resolution has included, of procedures against the Libyan nation, such as the no-fly zone, which includes commercial and civilian flights. This will increase the suffering of the Libyan people, and will have a negative impact on the general life of Libyan people.
"The international community should have exempted civilians from the resolution to secure their quality of life.
"Also, the total and inclusive freezing of all Libyan assets and investments will have a very negative impact on normal Libyans and also on Libya's ability to fulfill its contracts locally and internationally.
"Libya also finds that its very strange that the UN allows in its resolution the use of military power and there are signs that this might indeed take place.
"This goes clearly against the UN Charter, and its a violation of the national sovereignty of Libya. And it's also in violation of Article 4(2) of the UN Charter.
"And finally, we insist and emphasise our request for all international governments, NGOs and others to check the facts on the ground by sending fact-finding missions so that they can take the right decision by seeing the facts on the ground.
"Thank you." "

US Gulfstream IV tail nr N475LC overhead Mediterranean Sea near Cyprus - The mystery of 'torture plane' N475LC
As our nation debates the merits and legality of squeezing the gonads of Muslim clerics in dark, dank, undisclosed prison cells, and as we ponder the constitutional authority behind the warrantless bugging of telephones and personal computers owned by unindicted, uncharged American citizens, it is easy to mentally sidestep the nagging but inherent questions such abhorrent activities raise. After all, this is the Christmas season. There's shopping to be done. And all of that stuff is unfolding somewhere far, far away, right?

Libyan airspace closed to all traffic
Europe's air traffic control agency says Libya has closed its airspace to all traffic.
The move Friday comes a day after the UN Security Council authorized a no-fly zone over Libya and “all necessary measures” to stop strongman Moammar Gadhafi from launching attacks on his own people. The United States, France and Britain are now discussing how to enforce the no-fly zone.

Heaviest bombardment since fighting started
Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi bombarded the rebel-held city of Misrata on Friday with tanks and heavy artillery, rebels and residents said.
"There have been heavy bombardments since 7 o'clock (0500 GMT) this morning. They are bombing everything, the houses, the centre of the city," insurgent Saadoun told Reuters by phone from the city, the last big rebel stronghold in western Libya.
"It's the heaviest bombardment I have seen so far."

International arrest warrant for Gaddafi
MARK COLVIN: The UN vote comes on top of recently issued international warrants for the arrest of Colonel Gaddafi and his family.
Tim McCormack is an adviser to the prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. I asked him what the warrants meant.
TIM MCCORMACK: It means that the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has the authority to investigate alleged crimes occurring in Libya that come within the subject matter jurisdiction of the Court without Libya having consented as a state party to the Statute of the Court.
MARK COLVIN: So in practice what does that mean?
TIM MCCORMACK: Means that he can lay charges against any person in Libya from Muammar Gaddafi down through his senior political and military elite and ask the pre-trial chamber for approval to issue arrest warrants which would go out internationally for the arrest of any of those named individuals.

La marine française se déploie au large de la Libye - he French navy is deployed off theThe French navy is deployed off theLibyaLibya
Pending a possible order of equipment on the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, currently in port in Toulon, the air defense frigate Forbin just arrived off the coast of Libya. Ultramodern building, entered service in late 2010, will be able to participate in the establishment of a no-fly zone. Its radar and combat system permit, in particular, to detect and track aircraft within a radius of 400 kilometers. Forbin may also, through its Aster surface to air missiles, destroy several targets simultaneously with a range of about one hundred kilometers. This ability allows him, in particular, can provide a bulwark against the threat of Colonel Qaddafi to conduct reprisal raids in the Mediterranean if the international community would intervene militarily in Libya.
