How Obama turned on a dime toward war
At the start of this week, the consensus around Washington was that military action against Libya was not in the cards. However, in the last several days, the White House completely altered its stance and successfully pushed for the authorization for military intervention against Libyan leader Col. Muammar al-Qaddafi. What changed?

The White House - March 18, 2011 2:00 PM EDT
President Barack Obama demanded Friday that Moammar Gadhafi halt all military attacks against civilians and said that if the Libyan leader did not stand down the United States would join in military action against him.
Still, Obama also said the United States “is not going to deploy ground troops into Libya.”
In a brief appearance at the White House, Obama said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton would travel to Paris on Saturday to join in a meeting of allies called to discuss next steps in Libya, where Gadhafi has launched a brutal crackdown against rebels trying to end his 42-year reign.
I was awaiting a speech by Obama. It's unlike the USA to start a military operation without a statement from the President.

Libya declares ceasefire but fighting goes on
Libya's government has announced an immediate ceasefire against pro-democracy protesters, hours after the United Nations Security Council authorised a no-fly zone over the country.
In a statement televised on Friday, Moussa Koussa, the Libyan foreign minister, said his government was interested in protecting all civilians and foreigners.
"We decided on an immediate ceasefire and on an immediate stop to all military operations," he said, adding "[Libya] takes great interest in protecting civilians".
Koussa said because his country was a member of the United Nations it was "obliged to accept the UN Security Council's resolutions".
But government forces continued to fire on the rebel-held western city of Misurata, witnesses said, where an earlier attack had claimed the lives of at least 25 people.

NATO’s airborne surveillance: Eyes in the sky
Effective air defence is a NATO priority. The Alliance’s fleet of Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aeroplanes, play a key role in air defence across the Euro-Atlantic region.
While the recent problems in Libya have increased the need for airborne surveillance over the Mediterranean ocean, NATO has been routinely operating AWACS aircraft in the region as part of its long-standing counter-terrorist Operation Active Endeavour (OAE) since 2007.
