US planes 'dropped two bombs' to protect downed pilot
US officials insisted that rescue crews did not fire their weapons when retrieving the pilot, contesting media reports that a squad of Marines came in with "all guns blazing" and wounding several civilians.
The pilot and his weapons officer bailed out of their F-15E Strike Eagle fighter over Benghazi when it became crippled by a mechanical fault during a bombing raid on Monday night.

Operation Odyssey Dawn explained (Day 4)
Day 4 of Odyssey Dawn opened with the news of the F-15E Strike Eagle (91-0304/LN 492FS) which crashed in Libya during the night approximately 40 kilometres to the east of Benghazi as reported by Daily Telegraph reporter Rob Crilly and his photographer who were the first international journalists to visit the scene. Both crew members ejected safely: one was recovered by coalition forces while the other was recovered by the rebels. This seems to prove that they ejected at high altitude and did not land next each other.

US says rate of attacks on Libya slowing
BUILDING on what US officials called a successful first stage of international military action in Libya, the focus is shifting to widening a no-fly zone across the North African country while continuing smaller-scale attacks on Libyan air defences and setting the stage for a humanitarian relief mission.
Defence Secretary Robert Gates and others said the US military's role will lessen in coming days as other countries take on more missions and the need declines for large-scale offensive action such as the barrage of Tomahawk cruise missiles fired on Saturday and Sunday mainly by US ships and submarines off Libya's coast.
