Schüssel wins in Austria after voters reject right
A collapse in support for Jorg Haider's far right Freedom party gave Austria's Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel a stunning victory in yesterday's general election after his centre right People's party emerged as the largest party in more than 30 years. According to final results, excluding postal ballots which have yet to be counted, the People's party increased its share of the vote to 42.3 per cent, from 27 per cent in 1999. The Social Democrats, traditionally Austria's biggest party, only managed to increase their share of the vote by just under four percentage points to 36.9 per cent. Their weak result will raise questions about the political survival of Alfred Gusenbauer, the party's leader.

Defeated far Right could cling to power in Austria
JÖRG Haider’s far-right Freedom Party suffered a humiliating electoral defeat in Austria yesterday, but looked like it could still cling to power in a new coalition government. With almost half the votes counted, the Freedom Party was heading for just 10.4 per cent of the vote - down almost 17 per cent from its record results in 1999.

Austrian populist Joerg Haider's far-right party plunged in Sunday elections, but a landslide victory by his conservative partners could save their centre-right ruling coalition, projections showed. Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel of the conservative People's Party has signalled he is open to renewing the coalition whose collapse in September triggered snap elections, but talks could take weeks and no outcome is certain.

Haider's Freedom Party suffers severe losses in Austrian election
Voters catapulted the conservatives into first place in general elections Sunday but pounded rightist Joerg Haider's Freedom Party, stripping the conservatives' government partner of nearly two-thirds of its previous support. Preliminary results released by the Interior Ministry showed the conservative People's Party of Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel surging nearly 16 percentage points to gain more than 42%. That left it the strongest party for the first time in 36 years.

Fall from grace of a firebrand
The drubbing for Austrian far-right leader Joerg Haider's Freedom Party in Sunday's elections marks a dramatic fall from grace for the charismatic firebrand.
The drastic decline of the anti-immigration Freedom Party -- which lost nearly two-thirds of the votes it garnered two years ago -- put a dent in the polished image of the former party head who has continued to pull the strings from behind the scenes.

VIENNA, Austria: likely option.
Haider, casting his vote in Klagenfurt, capital of the southern Carinthia province he governs had defied predictions his party -- left in shambles after months of infighting between rightist supporters and moderates -- would do badly.
"There will be no crash," the Austria Press Agency cited him as saying.

VIENNA: the war
Despite its poor showing, the Freedom Party remained in position to extend its government role into the next legislative period.
Although the Social Democrats and the People's Party have buried differences in the past to govern in a "Grand Coalition," it was unclear whether the Social Democrats could opt to again cooperate with their traditional rivals.
