Freedom Party decimated in Austrian elections

The far-right Freedom Party in Austria has suffered a crushing defeat in the country's general election - down to 10 percent of the vote. Its coalition partner in the outgoing administration, the Conservative Peoples Party has claimed a sweeping victory but still short of an overall majority which will require talks to build a new coalition.

Austrian voters reject Haider's party

Joerg Haider's far-right Freedom Party was dealt a humiliating blow yesterday as its share of the national vote collapsed in Austria's parliamentary election and a former coalition partner swept to victory. End of the road for far-right Haider

Jörg Haider, the far right Austrian politician who once praised Hitler's employment policies, was fighting for his political survival last night after voters deserted his party in droves. The Freedom party's share of the vote collapsed to below 10% after bitter internal squabbles between Mr Haider and rival leaders.
