Global net censorship 'growing'
The level of state-led censorship of the net is growing around the world, a study of so-called internet filtering by the Open Net Initiative suggests.
The study of thousands of websites across 120 Internet Service Providers found 25 of 41 countries surveyed showed evidence of content filtering.

More Firefox Bloat? Say It Ain't So, Mozilla
When Firefox launched in beta release five years ago, it burst on the open-source browser scene like a young Elvis Presley -- slim, sexy and dangerous.
Since then it has attracted millions of users, generally set the agenda for browser development and unseated Microsoft's Internet Explorer as the de facto monopoly in the field. But, with Firefox 3.0 poised for release later this year, the "IE killer" is in danger of morphing into an early Fat Elvis, if increasing numbers of die-hard fans turned reluctant critics are any guide.

Pirate Bay plundered by hackers
Buccaneering BitTorrent source The Pirate Bay has been hacked and a copy of its user database stolen, the site admitted.
The Swedish outfit copped to the data breach in its blog, which ironically was the site of the vulnerability. It said:
They have got a copy of the user database. That is, your username and passwords. But, the passwords are stored encrypted, so it's not a big deal, but it's still very sad that it's out there. All emails are for instance encrypted as well, they will most likely not be able to decrypt them either (they are very encrypted)
We encourage all our users to change passwords as soon as possible - and if you have the same password on the bay as other places, you should update them as well.

Germany investigates Second Life child pornography
German prosecutors have launched an investigation to track down anonymous participants of the virtual computer game Second Life who are reportedly buying sex with other players who pose as children, as well as offering child pornography for sale.
Investigators in the city of Halle are acting on specific information about a German Second Life player, or avatar, who put child pornography images up for sale and paid for sex with underage players or players posing as minors.

Pandora to block non-US listeners
Web radio station Pandora is to block most non-US users accessing its service because of licensing constraints.
Mounting pressure from record labels has forced the company to stop streaming music to countries where licensing deals have not been agreed.

Digg Rebellion Highlights How The Community Is In Control
While the press has jumped all over the story of Digg users rebelling against Digg management concerning the AACS HD-DVD encryption key takedown notices, one of the more interesting points in all of this was ignored by the press, but picked up by more perceptive folks like Ed Felten and Michael Arrington: that the Digg community is clearly in control over what happens on the site.

The finger pointing culture of fear will always dominate a culture of openness. Media thrives on taking people down and creating a general fear of the worst possible outcome.
