"Unethical" HTML video copy protection proposal draws criticism from W3C reps
A new Web standard proposal authored by Google, Microsoft, and Netflix seeks to bring copy protection mechanisms to the Web. The Encrypted Media Extensions draft defines a framework for for enabling the playback of protected media content in the Web browser. The proposal is controversial and has raised concern among some parties that are participating in the standards process.

Wissenschaftliches Gutachten belegt: keine "Schutzlücke" ohne Vorratsdatenspeicherung
Dem Chaos Computer Club (CCC) wurde ein wissenschaftliches Gutachten der kriminologischen Abteilung des Max-Planck-Instituts (MPI) für ausländisches und internationales Strafrecht zugespielt, das sich detailliert mit der Frage der angeblichen "Schutzlücke" durch den Wegfall der Vorratsdatenspeicherung nach dem Urteil des Bundesverfassungsgerichts vom 2. März 2010 beschäftigt. Die Studie kommt zum eindeutigen Ergebnis, daß eine solche immer wieder behauptete Lücke nicht besteht. Die angebliche Notwendigkeit der Speicherung von 300 bis 500 Millionen Datensätzen pro Tag kann laut der Untersuchung nicht durch kriminologische Statistiken belegt werden.
Der CCC publiziert das 271-seitige Dokument, um endlich eine faktenbezogene Diskussion um die angebliche Notwendigkeit der Vorratsdatenspeicherung zu ermöglichen. "Die umfangreiche europaweite Erhebung und Auswertung des MPI offenbart, daß die Stammtischparolen von der 'Schutzlücke' durch den Wegfall der anlaßlosen Telekommunikationsdatenspeicherung keine Faktenbasis haben", faßte CCC-Sprecher Frank Rieger die Ergebnisse der Studie zusammen.

Österreich unterzeichnet ACTA - heute
Das umstrittene Anti-Piraterieabkommen ACTA wird von Österreich am Donnerstag in Tokio vom österreichischen Botschafter in Japan unterzeichnet. Das bestätigte ein Sprecher des Außenministeriums am Mittwoch der futurezone. Der Ministerrat hatte das Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), das in den vergangenen Jahren weitgehend unter Ausschluss der Öffentlichkeit zwischen 39 Staaten ausgehandelt wurde, bereits am Dienstag beschlossen. Durch den EU-Rat ging der Pakt bereits Mitte Dezember.
In Tokio werde das Abkommen deshalb unterzeichnet, weil Japan der Depositarstaat sei, wo Dokumente zu dem Pakt hinterlegt werden, so der Ministeriumssprecher. Das Abkommen muss noch vom österreichischen Parlament und vom EU-Parlament beschlossen werden, das den Pakt noch kippen kann.

Forget SOPA, Europe is about to ratify its bigger brother ACTA
Just as the SOPA and PIPA debate winds down in the US, the European Union is later this week set to work on ratifying a global intellectual property enforcement treaty: the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement.
European countries, including Ireland, will later this week join the US, Australia, Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Canada in supporting ACTA

ACTA: "Friedlicher Protest statt Attacken"
In der Nacht auf Dienstag hat AnonymousAustria aus Protest gegen das Anti-Piraterieabkommen ACTA mit Distributed Denial Of Service (DDoS)-Attacken diverse österreichische Regierungswebsites lahm gelegt. Doch was können derartige Angriffe bewirken? Michael Bauer vom Verein für Internetbenutzer Österreichs (vibe!at) hält DDoS-Attacken "für ein schlechtes Mittel des Online-Protests" und setzt sich stattdessen für friedliche Aktionen ein.
"Wir stehen ACTA ablehnend gegenüber, weil es hinter verschlossenen Türen verhandelt wurde und es weit über ein gewöhnliches Abkommen hinaus geht. Wir rufen dazu auf, vielfältige Protestaktionen zu setzen", erklärte Michael Bauer vom Verein für Internetbenutzer Österreichs (vibe!at) gegenüber der futurezone. DoS-Attacken gehören allerdings nicht zu den Mitteln, die der Verein für adäquat hält. Bei derartigen Attacken werden Server gezielt mit Anfragen bombardiert, bis diese wegen Überlastung zusammenbrechen oder nur noch langsam funktionieren.

Ask Slashdot: Choosing Anonymous Proxies?
There are lots of anonymous proxies out there, and anyone concerned about their privacy probably uses one for at least some of their web browsing. The Megaupload story highlights the fact that having servers in the USA is not a great idea. There are also other countries one may not want to trust. Oddly, very few proxy services mention where their equipment is located. What anonymous proxy services do you use? What criteria do you use to select them? How paranoid are you, and for what types of Internet usage?

Hackers-for-Hire Are Easy to Find
Sitting in his Los Angeles home, Kuwaiti billionaire Bassam Alghanim received an alarming call from a business associate: Hundreds of his personal emails were posted online for anyone to see.
Mr. Alghanim checked and found it to be true, according to a person familiar with the matter. The emails included information on his personal finances, legal affairs, even his pharmacy bills, this person said.

Anonymous setzt neue DDoS-"Waffe" ein
Nach Aufruf einer präparierten Seite wurde Server des US-Justizministeriums mit Anfragen überrollt
Neben dem DDoS-Tool Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) nutzen die Internet-Aktivisten von Anonymous offenbar eine neue Methode für Angriffe auf Server. Laut heise wurde für eine DDoS-Attacke auf das US-Justizministerium ein Link auf eine präparierte Website über Twitter verbreitet, die massenhaft Anfragen an justice.gov schickt.

How and Why Anonymous Took Down the FBI's Website
On Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, working with police in New Zealand, arrested the leaders of the popular file sharing service MegaUpload.com and scrubbed the site from the internet, alleging that it supports widespread copyright infringement. Coming just a day after the internet's campaign against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), the raid was perceived by many netizens as a declaration of war.
Within minutes of the announcement, Twitter accounts associated with Anonymous, the shadowy hacker collective, announced #OpMegaUpload, a massive retaliation against government and entertainment industry websites.

Iran Mounts New Web Crackdown
Iran is mounting new clampdowns on Internet expression, including rules that will impose layers of surveillance in the country's popular Internet cafes, as Tehran's political establishment comes under increasing strains from economic turmoil and threats of more international sanctions.
In the most sweeping move, Iran issued regulations giving Internet cafes 15 days to install security cameras, start collecting detailed personal information on customers and document users' online footprints.
Until now, Iran's cybercafes have been a youth-culture mainstay of most towns and neighborhoods, used not only by activists but also by other Iranians who believe the security of their home computers is already compromised.
