Between July 1945 and November 1962 the United States is known to have conducted 216 atmospheric and underwater nuclear tests. After the Limited Test Ban Treaty between the U.S. and the Soviet Union in 1963, nuclear testing went underground. It became literally invisible - but more frequent: the United States conducted a further 723 underground tests until 1992.

FACT: Condoleezza Rice was the top National Security official with President Bush at the July 2001 G-8 summit in Genoa. There, "U.S. officials were warned that Islamic terrorists might attempt to crash an airliner" into the summit, prompting officials to "close the airspace over Genoa and station antiaircraft guns at the city's airport." Iran will nach Angaben aus Diplomatenkreisen im Juni mit dem Bau eines Schwerwasserreaktors beginnen. Der 40-Megawatt-Reaktor könne genug Plutonium für eine Atomwaffe pro Jahr produzieren, sagte ein Gewährsmann am Mittwoch in Wien. Iran habe entsprechende Pläne bereits im vergangenen Jahr der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde (IAEA) mitgeteilt, trotzdem sende die Entscheidung für den Bau ein schlechtes Signal an die internationale Gemeinschaft.

Gulf War II Syndrome?
Four soldiers from a New York Army National Guard company serving in Iraq are contaminated with radiation likely caused by dust from depleted uranium shells fired by U.S. troops, a Daily News investigation has found.
They are among several members of the same company, the 442nd Military Police, who say they have been battling persistent physical ailments that began last summer in the Iraqi town of Samawah.

Anklage gegen Milosevic gescheitert
Fünf Jahre ist es jetzt her, dass die Nato mit Beteiligung Deutschlands Krieg gegen Jugoslawien geführt hat. Es hieß, im Kosovo hätten die Menschenrechte verteidigt und eine humanitäre Katastrophe verhindert werden müssen. Mittlerweile geht der Prozess gegen Slobodan Milosevic in Den Haag dem Ende entgegen und kaum jemand weiß, welches Urteil zu erwarten ist. Vielleicht stimmt das auch nicht ganz. Mehrheitlich wird wahrscheinlich davon ausgegangen, dass für Milosevic nichts anders als eine Verurteilung in Frage kommen kann. Dass dem keineswegs so ist, beschreibt Jürgen Elsässer in seinem neuen Buch "Kriegslügen. Vom Kosovokonflikt zum Milosevic-Prozess".

"Krieg" im Kärntner Rotlichtmilieu
Brandanschläge, Molotowcocktails und eine Handgranate haben das Klima in der Kärntner Rotlichtszene seit letztem Sommer verschärft. Gründe sind der Konkurrenzdruck und die Flut neuer Prostituierter, die zum Teil illegal arbeiten.
In den kleinen Etablissements ist die Stimmung miserabel. Seit den Anschlägen kommen kaum noch Freier, das Geschäft ist um die Hälfte zurückgegangen und teilweise völlig zusammengebrochen.
Weil bekannt war, wie ruhig es im Kärntner Milieu zuging, drängten Zuhälter aus anderen Bundesländern herein. In nur vier Jahren hat sich die Zahl der registrierten Prostituierten verdoppelt, von jenen, die illegal arbeiten, ganz zu schweigen.

Nazi porn film book shelved
The nation's literary pundits are speculating at length about Rowohlt publishing house's embarrassing brush with Nazi porn, coming as it does on the heels of other recent embarrassments for the respected publisher.
The book is entitled "Endstufe" (Final Stage), an obvious pun on the code word used by the Nazis for the Holocaust: "Endloesung" (Final Solution).

A Welsh woman who married into one of Germany's most prominent musical families nearly became Adolf Hitler's wife, a BBC Wales programme has revealed.
Winifred Williams, the daughter of a journalist from Brecon and his German wife, was adopted by relatives of her mother after being orphaned and went to live in Germany in 1908.
