RiP! A Remix Manifesto

Join Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor as he explores the issues of copyright and content creation in the information age. Using mash-up artist Girl Talk as its central protagonist RiP! A Remix Manifesto draws the lines of battle in the war of ideas.

At a time when file-sharing, remixing and open-source have become the new buzz words, Gaylor and Girl Talk help untangle the complex issues of copyright and present an alternative approach towards ownership and intellectual property.

John Cleese soll meine Grabrede halten

20 Beautiful Video Motion Pieces

A show reel is the motion picture equivalent of an artist’s portfolio. It is typically used as a tool to promote an artist’s skill, talent and experience in a selected field, such as acting, directing, cinematography, editing, special effects, animation, video games or another graphic-related field. It is conventional in the film industry to have one, and it is the main tool by which an artist promotes her or his own work.

Can Free Content Boost Your Sales? Yes, It Can

Have you checked out Monty Python’s YouTube channel? It’s got a selection of their brilliant (as always) clips, and it’s got links to buy their DVDs on Amazon. As those crazy Monty Python dudes put it,

“We’re letting you see absolutely everything for free. So there! But we want something in return. None of your driveling, mindless comments. Instead, we want you to click on the links, buy our movies & TV shows and soften our pain and disgust at being ripped off all these years.”

And you know what? Despite the entertainment industry’s constant cries about how bad they’re doing, it works. As we wrote yesterday, Monty Python’s DVDs climbed to No. 2 on Amazon’s Movies & TV bestsellers list, with increased sales of 23,000 percent.

Video Shows Every Flight on Earth in 72 Seconds

Aspiring scientists from the Zurich School of Applied Sciences have built a video simulation that displays the flight path of every commercial flight in the world over a 24-hour period. There isn't much of an application for it, but it sure is cool to look at.

YouTube Enables Deep Linking Within Videos

It’s not a big new feature but it’s certainly one that will come in handy: YouTube will now allow you to send users to a specific point in a video by appending a short tag to the end of a video’s URL. It’s pretty surprising that this functionality wasn’t available earlier, as Google Video introduced the same feature over two years ago. YouTube users have been forced to rely on third party services like Splicd to do the same thing.

The next time you upload a copyrighted video to Youtube, you're going to pay.

The next time you try to upload a video to YouTube that isn't supposed to be there, you may find it being monetized by the original content owner. That's because YouTube has recently partnered up with Nexicon, a company that acts as the middleman between content monitoring and copyright owners, enabling them to either send out automated takedown notices or monetize the unauthorized streams. And this new service isn't likely to stop at YouTube, as the company plans to launch a similar one that will sort through numerous P2P networks for copyrighted content in order to send bills to those users. Best of all, Nexicon wants to patent the entire system.

3M Launches first Pocket Projector

The holy grail of gadgets springs at last (from an unlikely source)

That’s projector, not protector. But geeks will rejoice nonetheless. The pocketsize projector has been the Holy Grail of gadgets for many years, and now we’ve got it. 3M sent us one of their first samples of their MPro110 mini projector a few weeks ago (but asked us to keep it on the down-low for a while). I immediately plugged it into a DVD player and watched Blackhawk Down on my desk—literally, on it, as I aimed it at my white Ikea desktop. (Ah, to be owned by a Swedish company.) It also worked on the wall, on a piece of 8.5-by-11-inch printer paper and on the back of my colleague, Doug.
