Rumsfeld okayed torture methods: Report

Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had approved various methods of interrogating terror suspects, in a memo under which US military personnel at Guantanamo Bay could put prisoners in "stress positions" for four hours, hood them and subject them to 20-hour-long interrogations.

The approval, first in December 2002 and later in a January 8, 2003 memo, allowed for inflicting "fear of dogs", and "mild non-injurious physical contact", The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Interpol IDs piracy link to funding of terrorism

There is new evidence that terrorist organizations around the world are getting at least some of their funding from the sale of illegally copied intellectual property, including pirated DVDs and CDs, according to Interpol and copyright trade groups.

According to an Interpol report prepared for the House Committee on International Relations, intellectual property crimes are a growing resource for terrorist groups from Northern Ireland to the Arab world, including al-Qaida and Hizbullah, and the RIAA has evidence that a pair of illegal CD plants in Pakistan is financed by Dawood Ibrahim, an Indian Muslim the Treasury Department named a "specially designated global terrorist" in October.

Thousands of Iranians said ready for suicide raids

Thousands of Iranians have signed up for suicide attacks on Israel, U.S.-led forces in Iraq and British author Salman Rushdie, a recruiting group said today.

Shiite Iran has strongly condemned the occupation of Iraq and voiced its outrage at damage to shrines in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

The father of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, condemned Rushdie to death in 1989 for alleged blasphemy in his novel "The Satanic Verses."

Taliban Told U.S. It Would Give Up Osama - Middleman

U.S. and Taliban officials met secretly in Frankfurt almost a year before the Sept. 11 attacks to discuss terms for Afghanistan to hand over Osama bin Laden, according to a German television documentary. But no agreement was reached and no further negotiations took place before the suicide hijackings in 2001. ZDF television quoted Kabir Mohabbat, an Afghan-American businessman, as saying he tried to broker a deal between the Americans and the purist Islamic Taliban rulers of Afghanistan, who were sheltering bin Laden and his al Qaeda network.
