New York Times Makes Big Foray Into TV
Vivian Schiller makes it her mantra: "We are not a news network."
For a new cable channel part owned by and part named for the nation's most prominent newspaper, The New York Times, it's a natural expectation.
Instead, the Discovery Times Channel, which officially begins operation Tuesday in about 29 million homes, is looking to become a behind-the-news network.
"We're going to treat things seriously, but hopefully have a little fun, also," said Schiller, who's running it.

The Greatest Show on Television: Adult Swim
Reality television has worn out its welcome. Worse, it has further watered down what was already a diluted mediascape. Things have gotten way out of hand. Reality programming has ceaselessly replicated itself geographically -- most of America's hit shows are European retreads with much higher budgets -- and thematically. Because, like sitcoms or, alarmingly enough, so-called "news" broadcasts on Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC or CNN, the narratives of reality programming are, contrary to reality itself, fixed. There are no curve balls to be found. What ultimately counts in reality television is the voyeur, not the visuals.

MTV Wants to Be News Source in Iraq War
The network of Eminem and "The Osbournes" is getting ready for war, too.
Much like the broadcast and cable news networks, MTV is laying out plans to cover a potential war with Iraq, expecting to be both a news source and sounding board for teenagers and young adults.
While many viewers are likely to turn to the traditional news networks for initial war reports, television outlets like BET and PBS are planning to bring their own takes to the story. MTV, with its special hold on young viewers, has a chance to reach those who might not regularly watch news.
