War Costs TV Networks $77 Million in 1st Week


elevision networks lost $77 million in advertising revenue in the first week of the U.S.-led war on Iraq, research firm CMR said on Tuesday. The major broadcast networks -- ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, lost $22.4 million in commercial revenue on March 20, which was the first full day of military action. Cable news channels lost $3.6 million that day, when many networks preempted their regular programming for war coverage, media research firm CMR said.

Al-Jazeera halts Iraq broadcasts


The Arabic news channel al-Jazeera says it is suspending its reports from Iraq in protest after Baghdad banned two of its correspondents from working there.

The station said the Iraqi Information Ministry had barred Diyar al-Omari - an Iraqi - from reporting, and ordered correspondent Tayseer Alouni to leave the country.

Iraq acts against Arabic satellite network


The Arab satellite channel Al-Jazeera announced Thursday that Iraqi officials are expelling one of its reporters from Baghdad and barring another from reporting.

The station interrupted a regular newscast to announce that Iraq’s Information Ministry had informed it that correspondent Diar al-Omari, an Iraqi, could no longer report for the network and that visiting correspondent Tayseer Allouni must leave the country.

EU to Seal Murdoch's Italian TV Deal on Wednesday


Rupert Murdoch's five month wait for the European Commission to allow News Corp. to buy Italian pay-TV firm Telepiu from Vivendi Universal is expected to end on Wednesday.

The Commission is expected to allow the 900 million euro ($981 million) acquisition, in which Telecom Italia also has a 20 percent stake, but in a limited form of the original proposal, according to EU diplomatic sources.

Peter Arnett ist seinen Job in Bagdad los


Der Fernsehsender NBC, für den der gebürtige Neuseeländer berichtete, hat Arnett wegen eines Auftritts im irakischen Staatsfernsehen gefeuert. Der ehemalige CNN-Frontmann im Golfkrieg 1991 hatte dort gemeint, die US-Strategie für den nunmehrigen Militärschlag gegen das Regime von Saddam Hussein sei wegen der überraschend starken Gegenwehr der Iraker fehlgeschlagen. Der Interviewer trug irakische Uniform.

NBC fired journalist Peter Arnett


on Monday, saying it was wrong for him to give an interview with state-run Iraqi TV in which he said the American-led coalition's initial plan for the war had failed because of Iraq's resistance. Arnett called the interview a "misjudgment" and apologized.

Arnett, on NBC's "Today" show on Monday, said he was sorry for his statement but added "I said over the weekend what we all know about the war."

Peter Arnett: U.S. war plan has 'failed'


The U.S. war plan has "failed," veteran war correspondent Peter Arnett told Iraqi TV in an interview that aired Sunday.

"The first war plan has failed because of Iraqi resistance. Now they are trying to write another war plan," Arnett said. "Clearly, the American war planners misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces."
