Al Jazeera's change of guard - A look at the real reason why the channel's director-general resigned.

When the former director-general of Al Jazeera, Wadah Khanfar, announced on Twitter that he was leaving the network, the news media immediately began speculating why. The New York Times, amongst others, linked his departure to leaked US diplomatic cables that appeared to show Khanfar had altered Al Jazeera's coverage at the request of the US government.
The focus then turned to his successor, Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, and whether the network was losing its independence with his appointment.

Egypt security forces raid unit of Al Jazeera
Security officers raided the offices of an Al Jazeera channel in Egypt and detained some of its staff, the Qatar-based broadcaster said on Sunday, describing the move as an attempt to drive the channel off the air.

Listening Post - Libya: Shining a light into a media black hole
The media's role in the historic Arab uprisings has so far been celebrated and feared, with the collaboration between new media and satellite TV too powerful for dictators to withstand. But that has all changed in Libya. Muammar Gaddafi appears to have learnt some media lessons from the uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia and quickly responded to protests in his country by shutting out foreign journalists, jamming TV transmissions and cutting off the internet and phone networks. The absence of professional journalists has meant that the job has been left to citizen journalists and the world has been able to follow the story through the often horrific and violent videos that have been leaked out of the country. This week we look at new media's role in shedding light on an otherwise information black hole.

Al Jazeera announces it is allowing any networks to broadcast its material due to the deliberate scrambling of its signals by Libya
Al Jazeera is suffering interference on the Arabsat satellite frequency.
The network, on the basis of investigations by specialists, has blamed Libya's intelligence services for jamming its TV signals and blocking its websites. It has traced the source of the jamming to a Libyan intelligence technical administration building south of Tripoli, the capital.

Free Monty Python Videos on Youtube Lead to 23,000% DVD Sale Increase
Following up on our previous news regarding Monty Python material on iTunes, Mashable is now reporting on a staggering increase of Monty Python DVDs sold on Amazon soon after the Python crew made some of their their more popular material free on Youtube. And by staggering, I mean 23,000% worth. Mashable notes that Monty Python’s DVDs climbed to the #2 spot on Amazon’s Movie’s and TV Bestseller List, and you don’t have to be a genius to follow that the sales were probably influenced by the Amazon links found on all of their Youtube clips.

ORF & Ägypten: Unprofessionell, unanständig und ohne Gespür
Der gestrige Fernsehabend war eine doppelte Enttäuschung. Zum einen erdreistete sich der ägyptische Diktator – das ägyptische Volk ignorierend – seinen schon angekündigten Rücktritt abzusagen (bzw. hinter lächerlichem Geplänkel so zu verstecken, dass er nicht gewertet werden konnte). Zum anderen kam die Berichterstattung des ORF zu den Ereignissen einem journalistischen Fiasko gleich: Nicht nur, dass es dem ORF nicht gelang für die schon seit Stunden angekündigte Rede Mubaraks einen ordentlichen Arabisch-Dolmetscher zu finden, der die ohne Zweifel historische Rede Mubaraks ohne Gestammel würdig zu übersetzen weiß. Nicht nur, dass sich die Moderatorin und ihr Gast bemüßigt fühlten eben diese Rede auch noch ständig zu kommentieren.

ORF-Sondersendung zu Ägypten: Mubarak, dekonstruiert
Die begnadete Persiflage enttarnte Inhaltslosigkeit, indem sie lediglich Phrasen und Überleitungen übersetzte
Ernst Jandl hätte sich gefreut wie ein kleines Kind, hätte er am Donnerstagabend die ORF-Übertragung der Rede Hosni Mubaraks sehen können. Der Übersetzer unterzog die vermeindliche Rücktrittsrede einer umfassenden Sprachdekonsruktion. Pure Konkrete Poesie.
