Pentagon's Mind-Reading Computers Replicate
"Augmented Cognition," the Darpa program to build computer interfaces that adapt to their users' brains, has officially run its course. But efforts to build mind-reading PCs continue throughout the military establishment.
Augmented Cognition relies on the idea that people have more than one kind of working memory, and more than one kind of attention; there are separate slots in the mind for things written, things heard and things seen. By monitoring how taxed those areas of the brain are, it should be possible to change a computer's display to compensate. If people are getting too much visual information, send them a text alert. If they reading too much at once, present some of the data visually -- in a chart or map.

Fake Fly Will Be Spy In The Sky
Scientists at Harvard have invented a robotic fly to send on reconnaissance missions in areas too dangerous for humans, such as those contaminated by chemical or biological weapons.
It can also be used to find hidden bombs and in search missions.
The "flybot", which can fit on a fingertip, is made of lightweight carbon and weighs less than a pin.

Help EFF figure out what's in the FBI's secret docs
Last week, I blogged about how the Electronic Frontier Foundation had prised 1,000+ pages' worth of FBI docs loose with a Freedom of Information Act request. These docs document the FBI's abuse of power after the PATRIOT Act. Now, 1,000+ pages is a LOT of material, and EFF needs your help.

Psst - wanna buy a pirate MPack toolkit?
The adage about no honour among thieves also applies to hackers, it would seem. Pirates are flogging knocked-off copies of the MPack hacker toolkit at a discount of up to 85 per cent, according to anti-virus experts at net security firm Symantec.
MPack is a web browser exploit toolkit, sold online by its original authors to hackers at prices ranging from $500 to $1,000. The application is offered with modular extras, maintenance updates and what amounts to support contracts that in many ways rival or surpass those offered by legitimate software suppliers.
Thousands of websites (mainly in Italy) were recently compromised using the MPack malware kit in order to add iframe tags that pointed surfers towards hacker-controlled websites.
