Player dies after lightning strikes team
A high school football player injured when lightning struck the team as it finished practice has died of severe burns, authorities said.
Russell Pennington, a senior at Grapeland High School, died Wednesday in a hospital. He was among about 40 players and coaches with the team in east Texas who were hospitalized after the lightning bolt struck Tuesday afternoon.

German authorities say they are puzzled by the disappearance of the entire national handball team from Sri Lanka.
German Sports Exchange Programme organiser, Dietmer Doering, said: "We initially thought the team had got lost in nearby woods while jogging."

Klitschko-Brüder wollen für Österreich boxen
Die bislang mit deutscher Lizenz kämpfenden ukrainischen Boxprofis Witalij und Wladimir Klitschko haben angeblich beim österreichischen Verband neue Kampfberechtigungen beantragt. Die beiden Schwergewichtler können dort mit Wilfried Sauerland zusammen arbeiten, dem Erzrivalen ihres bisherigen Promoters Klaus-Peter Kohl.

Dardevil arrested after Panama jump
Daredevil Felix Baumgartner has been arrested in Panama for an illegal leap off the 330-foot bridge that connects North and South America. Baumgartner had barely completed his jump off the Puente de Las Americas when security officers stepped in to arrest him, his photographer, and two assistants.
Baumgartner and his photographer are still in jail, but have not complained of ill treatment from the guards.
"They are all doing fine," said Baumgartner's assistant in Austria.

Whacky version of polo produces jumbo fun
With a clash of mallets and the stomping of jumbo feet that shook the earth, the game was under way. Tense commands were shouted by pith helmeted players tied firmly to their two-ton mounts. Very soon there was a muddle in the middle. The beasts collided and the ball disappeared in a forest of elephantine legs, raising some dust and much laughter.
We had just witnessed a classic scrum in the whacky sport of elephant polo.

Racing Pigeons Face Dope Testing
Britain's pigeon racers are being subjected to random dope tests as the sport's ruling body clamps down on suspected foul play.
The Royal Pigeon Racing Association has sent test kits to 60 race organizers across England after complaints some birds have been given performance-enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids and synthetic hormones.

In the opposite goal, Alex Manninger, the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper who was known for a neurotic intensity which made Woody Allen look calm, had contrived to help England into a lead which was doubled by Steven Gerrard's wonderful strike.
