Andrew Aquilini was browsing through the auction site Ebay, when he came across a bargain: a 52-inch plasma screen TV for $2,000. However, what he got instead was a 52-inch picture of a TV set.

Olympic Marathoner Tackled By Kilt-Wearing Fan
The last event of the 2004 Olympics, the marathon, ended with a sudden shock yesterday when its lead runner, Vanderlei de Lima of Brazil, was tackled and dragged off to the side by a fan wearing a kilt.

Squirrel Runs Circles Around Yanks, Tribe
This squirrelly newcomer caused quite a stir at Jacobs Field. A brown squirrel ran onto the field in the bottom of the third inning Wednesday night and ran circles around the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians.

Malibu in Zürich: Verein plant Limmat-Surfanlage
Zürich wird vielleicht bald zum Surfer-Mekka: Der Verein Stehende Welle will in der Limmat eine Surfanlage bauen.
«Wellenreiten ist auch fernab vom Meer möglich», heisst es auf der Webseite des Vereins – somit auch in Zürich. Um diese Vision Realität werden zu lassen, hat sich eine Gruppe eingefleischter Surfer zum Verein Stehende Welle zusammengeschlossen und plant nun beim Lettenviadukt eine Surfanlage. «Ein grosser, am Grund der Limmat installierter Gummisack wird aufgepumpt und erzeugt so eine künstliche Welle», erklärt Mitinitiant und Architekt Fabian Staehelin auf Anfrage.

Bisher haben die etwa 16.000 Aktiven und Funktionäre schon 15.000 Kondome verbraucht. Täglich werden etwa 1.000 Stück aus den Automaten geholt. Darüber hinaus gehörten bei den deutschen Olympiateilnehmer bereits zwei Kondome zur Grundausstattung.

Judging Mistake Allows US Athlete to Get Gold from South Korean
The FIG says a scoring error by three judges overseeing an event on the parallel bars resulted in US Gymnast Paul Hamm getting a gold medal that should have gone to South Korean gymnast Yang Tae-young. The FIG has suspended the judges for the error.

A 26-year-old skateboarder is scarred for life after she fell onto a red-hot Con Edison manhole cover — mere blocks from the scene of a tragic death earlier this year when a woman stepped onto an electrified Con Ed cover.
"I landed with my arm and back straight onto the metal cover," Wallenberg said. "I noticed it was kind of hot, but I didn't realize how bad it was until my skin started to sizzle."

Iranian judo champ withdraws from Olympics to avoid competing against Israeli
Iranian judo champion Arash Miresmaeili has withdrawn from the Olympics because he refuses to compete against Israeli opponent Ehud Vaks, the Islamic Republic News Agency said Saturday.
"I refused to play against an Israeli rival to sympathize with the oppressed Palestinian people," IRNA quoted Miresmaili as saying.

Coach fired for 'reasons to cheer naked' T-shirt
Gene Moore, 39, said he was unfairly terminated for allowing squad members to wear T-shirts that listed "10 Reasons to Cheer Naked." He was fired after the University Athletic Association received complaints about the shirts. The firing leaves the squad without a coach three weeks before the first football game.
