New 'Nigerian' Internet Scam
Agents at the U.S. Secret Service office in Orlando, Fla., believe a Problem Solvers investigation has uncovered a new, more sophisticated variation of the so-called "Nigerian 419 Advance Fee" scam targeting Americans who sell items over the Internet. The variation of the "Nigerian" scam involves authentic-looking cashier's checks that are issued for high-priced items.

Accused AOL phisher spammed the FBI
An Ohio woman accused in federal court of using mass forged e-mails from "AOL security" to swindle America Online subscribers out of their credit card numbers was allegedly tracked down after spamming exactly the wrong person: an FBI agent specializing in computer fraud, according to court records.

The web bites back
Protesters are turning the tables on government officials and businessmen who they say are making the web less pleasant to use. The web activists have found the personal details of the man behind a federal surveillance system and an e-mail spammer and are giving them a dose of their own medicine. The home address and phone numbers of the two men being widely circulated and posted on more than 100 websites.

Spam king lives large off others' e-mail troubles
You might call it the house that spam built.
Alan Ralsky's brand new 8,000-square-foot luxury home near Halsted and Maple in West Bloomfield has been a busy place this month. Outside, landscapers worked against the November cold to get a sprinkler system installed before the ground freezes. Inside, painters prepared to hang wallpaper.

Woman falls for Nigerian scam, steals $2.1m from law firm
The 59-year-old woman received a fax from one Dr. Mbuso Nelson of the Ministry of Mining in Pretoria, South Africa, asking for help in getting a cool $18m transferred to the US. We all know what comes next: the hapless victim set up a bank account, only to be told that certain expenses had to be met. Fuelled by greed and stupidity in equal measure, the woman dutifully wired huge sums to accounts in South Africa and Taiwan. Cue popping champagne corks in expensive Lagos restaurants.
