Police informant hacks into online communications of hundreds of individuals
The correspondence between the informant and two detectives indicates engagement in unlawful invasion into private communications of police suspects. Initially, the police found no irregularities, but later reported one of the detectives to the Prosecutor’s Office.

On June 11 2016 (UTC), we started sending an email to all active subscribers who provided an email address, informing them of an update to our subscriber agreement. This was done via an automated system which contained a bug that mistakenly prepended between 0 and 7,618 other email addresses to the body of the email. The result was that recipients could see the email addresses of other recipients. The problem was noticed and the system was stopped after 7,618 out of approximately 383,000 emails (1.9%) were sent.

New router chips could save open source firmware from FCC rules
A company that designs MIPS processors for networking hardware says it is developing technology that would allow installation of open source firmware on wireless routers while still complying with the US Federal Communications Commission's latest anti-interference rules. The FCC now requires router makers to prevent third-party firmware from changing radio frequency parameters in ways that could cause interference with other devices, such as FAA Doppler weather radar systems.

SECRET REPORT: UK spies have more data than they know what to do with
UK spies have more data at their disposal than they know what to do with, according to a new leaked document. The Intercept has published a secret document written by British intelligence officials back in 2010 expressing concerns that spies are being overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of information collected by spy agencies - making it more difficult to act on the data collected.

32m Twitter passwords may have been hacked and put up for sale on the Dark Web
Just days after Facebook czar Mark Zuckerberg’s social media accounts were found to be hacked, it appears that more folks will need to change their passwords.
ZDNet reported that a Russian hacker claimed to have a massive cache of millions of Twitter account logins for sale, for 10 bitcoins or about $5,807. LeakedSource, which indexes hacked credentials from data breaches, noted in a blog post that the database, of which it received a copy, contains more than 32 million accounts.

FBI wants access to Internet browser history without a warrant in terrorism and spy cases
The Obama administration is seeking to amend surveillance law to give the FBI explicit authority to access a person’s Internet browser history and other electronic data without a warrant in terrorism and spy cases. The administration made a similar effort six years ago but dropped it after concerns were raised by privacy advocates and the tech industry. FBI Director James B. Comey has characterized the legislation as a fix to “a typo” in the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, which he says has led some tech firms to refuse to provide data that Congress intended them to provide.

FBI: Exploit that revealed Tor-enabled child porn users wasn’t malware
A federal judge in Virginia has ruled that a case against Edward Matish, a man accused of downloading child pornography, should stand—preserving the defendant’s upcoming trial date. Also on Wednesday, an FBI agent explicitly denied that the "network investigative technique" (NIT) used to locate Matish and break through his Tor-enabled defenses is malware.

Three years ago today, The Guardian published the first story based on the huge archive of documents that that Edward Snowden stole from the National Security Agency while working as an NSA contractor. Then-Attorney General Holder’s Justice Department quickly charged Snowden with felonies for theft of government property and mishandling classified information. Last week, however, Holder praised Snowden. “I think that he actually performed a public service by raising the debate that we engaged in and by the changes that we made,” Holder said.

Several groups have banded together to call for an end to warrantless mass surveillance. Fight for the Future and a coalition of groups are using the third anniversary of Edward Snowden's revelations of the extent of the NSA's surveillance practices to drum up support for the end of Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act of 2008.
