EFF Wins Release of Secret Court Opinion: NSA Surveillance Unconstitutional
For over a year, EFF has been fighting the government in federal court to force the public release of an 86-page opinion of the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC). Issued in October 2011, the secret court's opinion found that surveillance conducted by the NSA under the FISA Amendments Act was unconstitutional and violated 'the spirit of' federal law.

North Carolina State University Gets $60 Million To Help NSA Build Bigger And Better Haystacks
Who wants to work on a collaborative data project with a badly wounded intelligence agency? I'm not seeing a lot of hands... How about if I ask it with a couple of exclamation points thrown in?!?! Still nothing...
Given what we know now, it's probably safe to assume that no one wants to sign a deal with this particular devil if the NSA's abortive recruitment drive at the University of Wisconsin is any indication. The recruiters appeared to believe they could just walk in and harvest a few souls hand out a few heavily-redacted business cards while talking up Team NSA's anti-terrorism efforts.

Latest Leak: NSA Can Spy On Almost Anything, Gets To Set Its Own Filters
And, here we go again. This time, it's the WSJ journal with the scoop on NSA surveillance, and how the defenders of the NSA have been lying to us. Despite claims that the NSA was really only focused on foreign communications, the WSJ is reporting that it actually covers 75% of US internet traffic:

Guardian told to destroy NSA files for national security, says Clegg
Nick Clegg has endorsed the government's decision to ask the Guardian to destroy leaked secret NSA documents on the grounds that Britain would face a "serious threat to national security" if they reached the "wrong hands".
In a statement, a spokesman for the deputy prime minister gave the first official confirmation that the cabinet secretary, Sir Jeremy Heywood, made the request to the Guardian.

Journalist For Time Magazine Announces His Eagerness To Defend US Drone Strike Killing Julian Assange
We've already discussed the odd and somewhat sickening way in which certain mainstream journalists have been clearly cheering on the criminalization of investigative journalism, but Time Magazine's Michael Grunwald took it to a new and incredibly disgusting level this weekend, with a now deleted tweet in which he gleefully announced his eagerness to see the US kill Julian Assange, and then to defend the government for doing so:

NSA broke privacy rules thousands of times per year, audit finds
The National Security Agency has broken privacy rules or overstepped its legal authority thousands of times each year since Congress granted the agency broad new powers in 2008, according to an internal audit and other top-secret documents.
Most of the infractions involve unauthorized surveillance of Americans or foreign intelligence targets in the United States, both of which are restricted by statute and executive order. They range from significant violations of law to typographical errors that resulted in unintended interception of U.S. e-mails and telephone calls.

Don’t worry, NSA says—we only “touch” 1.6% of daily global Internet traffic
On the same day that President Barack Obama spoke to the press about possible surveillance reforms—and released a related white paper on the subject—the National Security Agency came out with its own rare, publicly-released, seven-page document (PDF), essentially justifying its own practices.
The entire document is dated August 9, 2013, and has no attributable names or contact details on it. Its most striking portion?
