Zwangsdatenspeicherung: EU-Rat klopft Mitgliedsländer ab
Ein jüngst im Internet aufgetauchtes internes EU-Papier zeigt die unterschiedlichen Positionen auf
Anfang August sandte die im EU-Rat [DG H III] angesiedelte "Multidisziplinäre Arbeitsgruppe Organisiertes Verbrechen" einen Fragebogen zur Frage der Speicherung von Verbindungsdaten an sämtliche Mitgliedsländer aus. Die aufschlussreichen Antworten wurden jetzt auf einer holländischen Site publik.

New gun stamps serial-number on bullets as they're fired
Rifled weapon barrel engraver and scanner. A computer-controlled laser etching probe etches a firearm-identifying indicia such as a barcode encoded serial number into the bore of a firearm. Owner registration data coupled with the serial number is stored in a central database. A computer-controlled scanner reads the barcode from a bullet fired from an etched firearm for comparison with registration data in the central database, thereby identifying the registered owner of the firearm from which the bullet was fired.

Just Say No To .DOC or JSNTD!
Yup. An idea. Or JSNTD! "Just Say No To .DOC" If you think about Microsoft Office, the single most dangerous application, without question, is Microsoft Word. Here's why:
Word documents are passed around as frequently as air in most companies Word documents can contain macro viruses Word .DOC documents are unbelievably proprietary at the file format level. I know this because a company I used to own wrote our own .DOC reader in pascal (don't ask) and then C++. We spent tens of thousands to decipher the arcane nature of Word "sprms" (sperms). And, yes, we had the official Microsoft docs. And, yes, they're wrong. And, at the end of all of it, we had this horrible code base that had been hacked on and special cased beyond belief (although there is something to be said for the "elegance" of a 5,400+ line switch statement).

Nach einem halben Jahr ist der Abbau der größten russischen Abhörstation "Lourdes" auf Kuba abgeschlossen, im Karibikstaat spricht man von einer weiten Oktoberkrise Stillschweigend und ohne einen offiziellen Abschiedsakt haben russische Techniker und Militärs auf Kuba den Abbau des "Zentrums für elektronische Operationen" auf Kuba abgeschlossen. Besser bekannt unter dem Namen "Lourdes" hatte dieser größte militärische Stützpunkt außerhalb des nationalen Territoriums zunächst die Sowjetunion und dann Russland mit mehr drei Viertel der geheimdienstlichen Daten über die USA versorgt.

Light holds key to uncrackable codes
Communication satellites could soon be using a technique to produce secret messages that are reputedly uncrackable, thanks to experiments by British and German researchers. The team from QinetiQ, the commercial arm of Britain's defence research agency, and their colleagues at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, say they developed a secure method for sending the encryption keys used to unscramble coded information.

Der offizielle Echelon-Bericht von Gerhard Schmid an das EU-Parlament
Am 5. September 2001 stellte Gerhard Schmid, Berichterstatter des nicht ständigen EU-Untersuchungsausschusses zu Echelon, seinen Bericht im EU-Parlament zur Abstimmung. Seiner Rede, die wir hier ungekürzt wiedergeben, folgte die Abstimmung: Das Parlament segnete den Bericht mit einer satten Zwei-Drittel-Mehrheit ab. Mit dieser Rede wurde die Existenz von Echelon "amtlich".
