Twins crack face recognition puzzle
Israelis Michael and Alex Bronstein think they have the answer.
The computer whiz-kids -- 22-year-old identical twins almost impossible to tell apart -- have applied a new technology to recognizing faces in a way that may yet revolutionize international security.
"I said it to them as a joke: if you succeed in building a system that can distinguish between the two of you, you'll get (a grade of) 100," said the twins' professor, Ron Kimmel of the Technion Institute in Haifa.
"They succeeded and got 100. They are brilliant."

Windows Root kits a stealthy threat
Now dubbed "Slanret", "IERK," and "Backdoor-ALI" by anti-virus vendors, experts say the tool is a rare example of a Windows "root kit" - an assembly of programs that subverts the Windows operating system at the lowest levels, and, once in place, cannot be detected by conventional means.
Also known as "kernel mode Trojans," root kits are far more sophisticated than the usual batch of Windows backdoor programs that irk network administrators today. The difference is the depth at which they control the compromised system. Conventional backdoors like SubSeven and BO2K operate in "user mode", which is to say, they play at the same level as any other application running on the compromised machine. That means that other applications - like anti-virus scanners - can easily discern evidence of the backdoor's existence in the Window's registry or deep among the computer's files.

2003 IS ANOTHER Y2K FOR SURVIVAL GEAR SALES
At hardware stores and survivalist supply shops like The Survival Shack in Horse Branch, Arkansas, the shelves have been picked clean. We spoke to Clem Riley, an employee of The Survival Shack. "Hooey! we're making so much money. When Y2K came and went and nothing ever did happen, we thought we were going to have to close. Only the nutbars with cabins up in the woods were buying our stuff. That started to change after 9/11, but everything really took off thanks to Tom Ridge. It's bigger than 1999. We're going to be rich!"
