New mobile message craze spreads
Phone owners now have something else to do with their handset: bluejacking.
This involves sending anonymous text messages to other phone users via Bluetooth short-range radio.

MATRIX
is the latest data mining program to emerge from the government. This surveillance system combines information about individuals from government databases and private-sector data companies. It then makes those dossiers available for search by government officials and combs through the millions of files in a search for “anomalies” that may be indicative of terrorist or other criminal activity.

Den Kindern auf der Spur
Manchmal sind sich Eltern einfach unsicher: Ist mein Kind wirklich in der Schule? Oder: Wo bleibt der Kleine denn, er sollte doch schon vor zehn Minuten zu Hause sein. Um solch brennenden Fragen zu lösen, gibt es jetzt einen neuen Handydienst, der Kinder orten kann.

Wir wissen nicht, von welchen Spielzeugen Alice Cooper da singt. Handys, PCs oder doch eher Butterfly-Messer und Brechstangen? "And we got no principles/And we got no innocence." Coopers "School's out" fasst zusammen, was inzwischen deutsche Ordnungshüter bewegt und diverse polizeiliche Pilotprojekte auf den Plan rief: Schulschwänzer.

DOD begins two weeks of IPv6 interoperability tests
The Department of Defense will explain in a Web conference Friday why migrating the Internet's infrastructure to IPv6 is critical for the nation's defense, and will present its plans for a two-week test program called Moon which will examine interoperability of IPv6 equipment, software and services.

Japanische Stadt will Kinder überwachen
In Japan will eine ganze Stadt ihre Kinder satellitengestützt überwachen lassen. Die Stadt Murakami im Norden Japans plant alle 2.700 Volksschulkinder und Schüler der Mittelschul-Unterstufe mit Pager-ähnlichen Geräten auszustatten, mit deren Hilfe die Eltern dann den Aufenthaltsort ihrer Kinder online verfolgen können.

Pentagon Awards $40M for Blimp Contract
The Pentagon (news - web sites) has awarded Lockheed Martin Corp. a $40 million contract to develop a high-flying, remote-controlled blimp that would monitor U.S. borders and scan the horizon for enemy missiles. The idea is to supplement radar and satellites. The helium-filled dirigibles — about 25 times larger than those seen at sporting events — could also be used to monitor combat zones overseas.
