Big Brother to Watch Over Island
If you have ever seen the cult '60s British television program The Prisoner, in which captured Cold War spies live on an island under constant surveillance, you can imagine what life may soon be like on Ayers Island, on the Penobscot River near the University of Maine.
In coming years, visitors to Ayers Island, the site of an abandoned paper and textile mill in Orono, Maine, will be spied upon by a comprehensive network of video cameras, motion detectors and sensors. Lurking behind all of those sensors will be an artificial intelligence system that will decide who can be trusted and who is deserving of greater scrutiny.

Postbank stellte "Firewall" zu hoch ein, Kunden konnten kein Geld abheben
Nach Angaben der 'Neuen Presse', versucht sich die deutsche Post vor dem Computervirus 'Sasser' zu schützen. Dadurch wurde das Bankgeschäft stark beeinträchtigt, so dass rund 300.000 Post-Computer nicht mehr in Betrieb genommen werden können.
So ist es für viele Kunden auch weiterhin nicht möglich, ihre Geldgeschäfte am Schalter zu betätigen. Grund für die eingeschränkte Funktion der Post-Rechner, ist eine zu hoch eingestellte 'Firewall'.

Nach der niederländischen UPC blockieren Nigeria-Spammer nun die spanische Telefónica.
Wer bei der spanischen Telefongesellschaft Telefónica Internet-Kunde ist, wird momentan seine E-Mails oft nicht mehr los: Fast alle IP-Adressen der Telefónica sind auf Spam-Blacklists gelandet, weil die Nigeria-Spammer nun spanische Internet-Cafés unsicher machen.

Video-Überwachung in Österreich nach britischem Vorbild
Nach den Terroranschlägen in Madrid setzt der österreichische Innenminister mehr Kameras durch
Lange vor den Anschlägen in Madrid hatte der österreichische Innenminister bereits eine verstärkte Videoüberwachung des öffentlichen Raums angedacht. Doch erst im Windschatten aktueller Terrorangst scheinen derartige Big Brother-Ambitionen besonders einfach durchsetzbar. Was kritische Datenschützer für eine problematische Placebo-Aktion halten, wird nach Madrid allerdings von der Mehrheit der österreichischen Bevölkerung begrüßt.

Linked below is a policy-hardening tool for Windows. It is designed for Windows XP, but can be also used for other Windows versions. The tool supplies a simple GUI for some of the most common security problems in Microsoft Windows.
The supported features include:

Top 75 Security Tools
In May of 2003, I conducted a survey of Nmap users from the nmap-hackers mailing list to determine their favorite security tools. Each respondent could list up to 8. This was a followup to the highly successful June 2000 Top 50 list. An astounding 1854 people responded in '03, and their recommendations were so impressive that I have expanded the list to 75 tools! Anyone in the security field would be well advised to go over the list and investigate tools they are unfamiliar with. I discovered several powerful new tools this way. I also plan to point newbies to this page whenever they write me saying "I do not know where to start".

OpenSSH for Windows
OpenSSH for Windows is a free package that installs a minimal OpenSSH server and client utilities in the Cygwin package without needing the full Cygwin installation. This is similar to the package formerly available from NetworkSimplicity.
The OpenSSH for Windows package provides full SSH/SCP/SFTP support. SSH terminal support provides a familiar Windows Command prompt, while retaining Unix/Cygwin-style paths for SCP and SFTP.

Bleibt das Echelon-Lauschsystem Deutschland erhalten?
Eigentlich hatte die NSA im Frühjahr 2001 angekündigt, den in Deutschland befindlichen Lauschposten für das Überwachungssystem Echelon nach der erhöhten Aufmerksamkeit zu schließen, die durch den Untersuchungsausschuss des EU-Parlaments entstanden ist ( Europa-Parlament verabschiedet Echelon-Bericht). Dann kam der 11.9. und die Schließung sowie die geplante Verlegung nach Menwith Hill wurden erst einmal vertagt ( Lauschposten in Bad Aibling bleibt bestehen). Letztes Jahr wurde dann trotz der politischen Spannungen zwischen Deutschland und den USA beschlossen, einen Teil der Belegschaft in die neue Lauschstation in Griesheim bei Darmstadt zu verlegen.

Am Arbeitsplatz im Büro sollen mehr Krankheitserreger als auf der Toilette nisten. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt eine gestern veröffentlichte Studie der Universität des US-Bundesstaates Arizona. Demnach sind auf der Computertastatur, der Maus und dem Telefon bis zu 400 Mal mehr Mikroben zu finden als auf dem Toilettensitz. Die höchste Ansteckungsgefahr geht von der Telefonanlage aus.
