Unabhängig voneinander haben zwei Forscher-Teams herausgefunden, wie der krebserregende Stoff Acrylamid in Lebensmitteln wie Pommes Frites, Kartoffelchips, Keksen und Brot entstehen kann. Demnach bildet sich Acrylamid beim starken Erhitzen von Nahrungsmitteln wie Kartoffeln und Mehl, die bestimmte Sorten Zucker und die Aminosäure Asparagin, ein natürlicher Bestandteil von Eiweiß, enthalten. Letzteres kommt in relativ hohen Mengen in Kartoffeln und einigen Getreidesorten ungebunden vor.

Imagine a CD with a storage capacity not of 650 MB but 650 million MB. Such a storage capacity is theoretically possible because of experiments using individual atoms to store data. But don't expect it soon, the gap between theory and practice is wide.

Der deutsche Physiker Jan Hendrik Schön veröffentlichte in den vergangenen Jahren eine spektakuläre Entdeckung nach der anderen. Dafür sammelte er international renommierte Preise ein und wurde bereits als potenzieller Kandidat für einen Nobelpreis gehandelt. Dann kam der tiefe Fall, denn andere Physiker konnten seine Experimente nicht wiederholen. Offensichtlich war geschlampt und vielleicht sogar gefälscht worden.

The bunker nightmare
As the 1999 war in Yugoslavia Ended, doors to a bunker dug deep underneath Pristina Airfield opened, and nearly a dozen unharmed Serbian MiG-21 fighters emerged to retreat from the area. The United States had repeatedly tried to destroy this series of tunnels and caves with GBU-28s, 5,000-pound precision-guided "bunker busters" developed during the Gulf War. But the best those hulking bombs could do was seal off entryways by burrowing a few feet in before exploding from the impact. The MiGs, sheltered much farther down, were untouched.
