CA Supreme Court Gives Go Ahead For T-Mobile Phone Unlocking Lawsuit

Just a few days after a class action lawsuit was filed in California against Apple for locking down the iPhone, the California Supreme Court ruled on a different case that may have an impact on the Apple case. It's given the go ahead on a separate lawsuit against T-Mobile for locking its phones and requiring an early termination fee.

APPLE AND AT&T SUED FOR $1.2 BILLION OVER iPHONE

On Friday, October 5, 2007, the law offices of Folkenflik & McGerity and Hoffman & Lazear filed a $1.2 billion class action on behalf of owners of the iPhone against Apple, Inc. and AT&T Mobility, LLC (the AT&T cellular telephone carrier) in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, in San Jose, Paul Holman and Lucy Rivello v. Apple, Inc., AT&T Mobility, LLC. The case asserts claims under the Federal antitrust laws, California antitrust laws and California unfair trade practices laws, based on Apple and AT&T’s agreements to restrict iPhone users to using only the AT&T cellular network for voice and data, and to restrict iPhone users to only using applications from Apple.

Hackers hit back at iPhone update

The war between Apple and the hackers is heating up, after a 'fix' for the recent iPhone update was posted online. Apple's recent update for the iPhone's firmware rendered unlocked iPhones - those that had been modified either through software or other means to work outside of AT&T's network - unusable, and the firm has so far refused to back down from its hardline stance.

Hands-on with Texas Instruments' cellphone projector

Now that we have email, internet, TV, GPS, cameras, and satellite radio on our cellphones, our next wish is for bigger, higher resolution screens -- which seems paradoxical, because larger displays almost always mean bulkier devices. Well Texas Instruments thinks it'll soon be able to nullify this trade-off with an in-handset projector that we've heard about several times before, but last night's Pepcom event in New York was the first time we've been able to peep the technology up close.

HOW TO: Hack the iPhone to work anywhere in the world -- 10 step guide with pics

With the price of the 8GB iPhone dropping to $US399 ($AU483) overnight , how can anyone resist the temptation of buying one and hacking it to work in Australia?

Here's the step-by-step on how to get it working on any 2G mobile network in the world -- including Optus, Telstra, Vodafone or Virgin Mobile in Australia. (The iPhone cannot be made to work on Three because it is a purely 3G network and the iPhone is 2G only.)

This tutorial uses the TurboSIM method and assumes you are on a Mac.

3G, 16GB iPhone for Europe in November?

Apple may launch its iPhone campaign in Europe with a 3G-capable iPhone with enhanced storage, according to what appears to be a leaked ad from T-Mobile Germany. The ad promises a version of the handset with support for 3G-level cellular Internet access using both the US-friendly HSDPA format and typically Europe-only UMTS, with theoretical download speeds reaching the format's full 3.6Mbps. It also suggests that the device will carry 16GB of memory, representing the first storage upgrade to the device since its launch in June. Visual Voicemail and the 2-megapixel camera would remain the same as for the US version.

iPhone Hacking Kit, the next generation

In mid-August, I posted a detailed guide to hacking your iPhone here at iPhone Central. In those free-wheeling bygone days of iPhone hacking you customized and manipulated your phone using a combination of a simple “jailbreak” application and a lot of command-line work in the Mac terminal. To hack your phone then, you had to have access to a lot of different files, you had to transfer these files using arcane commands, and you had to make sure not to screw up, or miss any steps, lest you be forced to start over. If things went well, the entire process took 30-45 minutes.
