Standing in solidarity with Turkey’s journalists

Index on Censorship supports the “I am a journalist” campaign launched by journalists and media freedom advocates from Turkey. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Turkey who fiercely continue their jobs despite facing relentless attacks and attempts to silence them. We also express our support to the 44 journalists and news distributors in jail, and to those facing arrest as retaliation for exercising their right to freedom of expression and freedom to inform. Here is the campaign statement: I am a journalist! Journalism is not a crime. In Turkey, harassment of the press is getting worse by the day.

Andrea Leadsom quits Conservative leadership race

Andrea Leadsom has pulled out of the contest to become the next Conservative Party leader and UK PM - with Theresa May now set to succeed David Cameron. Mrs Leadsom said she did not believe she had sufficient support to lead a "strong and stable government". She also said a nine-week leadership campaign at such a "critical time" for the UK would be "highly undesirable".

Andrea Leadsom’s Campaign to Lead Britain Might Foster Fear of Islam, Leak Suggests

The race to be the next leader of Britain’s ruling Conservative Party, and hence prime minister of the United Kingdom, was whittled down to two candidates on Thursday: Theresa May, the home secretary, and Andrea Leadsom, deputy energy minister. As the two lawmakers with the most support from their colleagues, they will now spend the next two months trying to win the votes of the party’s members, a small and deeply unrepresentative portion of the British electorate thought to number less than 150,000. (By comparison, more than 33.5 million people voted in last month’s referendum on Britain’s membership in the European Union.)

Russia’s State Duma just approved some of the most repressive laws in post-Soviet history

On Friday, June 24, Russia's State Duma approved a final draft of several anti-terrorist laws spearheaded by deputy Irina Yarovaya. Though lawmakers removed many of the legislation's most odious amendments at the last minute (which, in part, would have made it possible to revoke convicts' Russian citizenship and their right to travel abroad), the bill still revises dozens of existing laws in ways that could have profound consequences for people living in Russia. For “Yarovaya's legislation” to become law, the Federation Council must next approve the legislation, and then President Putin needs to sign it. There is no doubt that this will happen. Meduza offers a brief summary of what the State Duma just set into motion.

Statement by FBI Director James B. Comey on the Investigation of Secretary Hillary Clinton’s Use of a Personal E-Mail System

Good morning. I’m here to give you an update on the FBI’s investigation of Secretary Clinton’s use of a personal e-mail system during her time as Secretary of State. After a tremendous amount of work over the last year, the FBI is completing its investigation and referring the case to the Department of Justice for a prosecutive decision. What I would like to do today is tell you three things: what we did; what we found; and what we are recommending to the Department of Justice. This will be an unusual statement in at least a couple ways. First, I am going to include more detail about our process than I ordinarily would, because I think the American people deserve those details in a case of intense public interest. Second, I have not coordinated or reviewed this statement in any way with the Department of Justice or any other part of the government. They do not know what I am about to say.

"Although there is evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case."
