German President Could Lose His Immunity
Prosecutors requested on Thursday that Germany’s Parliament strip the country’s embattled president of his immunity from prosecution, saying they had “factual indications” of his long-suspected improper ties to business executives. The resulting scandal has become an ever-greater distraction for Chancellor Angela Merkel and her government.

Versteckt die Regierung Unfähigkeit hinter Unverschämtheit?
Plötzlich musste mit dem “Sparpaket” alles ganz schnell gehen. Wieso eigentlich? Lange Zeit hatten SPÖ und ÖVP den Abschluss der Verhandlungen bei beeindruckendem Stillschweigen hinausgezögert. Doch dann ging alles sehr schnell. Der Beweggrund könnte ein Klassiker der politischen Kommunikation sein.
Wenn man der Öffentlichkeit etwas präsentiert, das auf wenig Zustimmung stoßen wird, dann möchte man dass dies möglichst wenig Aufmerksamkeit bekommt. Politische Maßnahmen bekommen die Aufmerksamkeit der Wähler durch die Medien. Möchte man, dass die Medien sich möglichst wenig mit etwas beschäftigen das eigentlich auf großes Interesse stoßen würde, versucht man diese Information so zu präsentieren, dass es für die Medien viel Arbeit bedeutet und dass das nächste große Thema unmittelbar bevorsteht.

Blaufunk: TA-Geld für Strasser?
„Format“ berichtet nun von einem im Februar 2006 geschlossenen Vertrag von VCP mit der Telekom Austria - einem „Term Sheet für die Mandatsvereinbarung Projekt Belvedere“. Strassers Auftrag als Projektleiter war demnach „die Optimierung der Telekommunikationsinfrastruktur auf Landes- und Bundesebene“. Nach „Format“-Angaben geht das Bundesamt für Korruptionsbekämpfung (BAK) dem Verdacht nach, dass sich das Tetron-Konsortiumsmitglied Telekom Austria mit dem VCP-Auftrag beim Ex-Innenminister für die Auftragsvergabe revanchiert haben könnte. Für alle Genannten gilt die Unschuldsvermutung.

Fake Putin arrest video becomes online hit
A fake news report placing Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the dock has become an online hit, getting nearly 3 million views in just three days.
The digitally altered clip posted on YouTube this week used news footage of the 2010 trial of former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky to put Putin on trial instead of the businessman.

Following in the immortalised footsteps of Joan of Arc, General de Gaulle and Marianne – the full-figured, flowing-haired female symbol of the French republic who graces Gallic public buildings – the president's wife is being cast as a six-foot bronze statue.

Turkmenistan: Der Wahlsieger steht bereits fest
Staatschef Berdymuhammedow wird am Sonntag wohl für fünf weitere Jahre im Amt bestätigt. Dass er das Land aus der Isolation führt, wird zusehends unwahrscheinlich.
„Setz hier noch eine Kuppel drauf, und auf das medizinische Institut auch noch eine“, befielt der Herr im grauen Polyesteranzug seinem ergebenen Zuhörer, einem türkischen Bauunternehmer. Der gedrungene Mann, der so leichtfertig glänzende Kuppeln auf öffentlichen Gebäuden verteilt, als handle es sich dabei um Sahnehäubchen auf einer Torte, ist Turkmenistans Präsident Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedow.

France’s Health Minister Urges Homeless to Stay Indoors this Winter
Junior minister Nora Berra was ridiculed on the internet for writing a blog at the weekend saying toddlers, old people, the sick and homeless were particularly vulnerable in times of extreme cold and should “avoid going outdoors”.
Her note sparked a flurry of Twitter messages and media reports that she was suggesting the homeless not leave home.

Help users in Iran reach the internet
In the last 48 hours a major campaign of filtering has started in Iran - it started slow and now appears to be that nearly all SSL/TLS traffic is blocked on a few major Iranian ISPs. Details are rather rough but we're working on some solutions - we've long had an ace up our sleeves for this exact moment in the arms race but it's perhaps come while the User Interface edges are a bit rough still.
Here's the deal - we need people to run Tor bridges but a special kind of Tor bridge, one that does a kind of traffic camouflaging - we call it an obfuscated bridge. It's not easy to set up just yet because we were not ready to deploy this for everyone yet; it lacks a lot of analysis and it might even only last for a few days at the rate the arms race is progressing, if you could call it progress.

Protesters Throng Frozen Moscow in Anti-Putin March
Tens of thousands of antigovernment protesters marched on Saturday through this city, gripped by bitter Arctic cold, in a third major effort by Russians opposed to Vladimir V. Putin’s return to the presidency.
A series of similar actions in December shocked the Russian establishment with their size and giddy, infectious mood, as a famously passive part of the electorate coalesced into huge crowds that chanted “Putin, go away” and “We exist.” But the momentum seemed to dissipate in January, as opposition factions squabbled and Mr. Putin’s victory in the March 4 election began to appear imminent and certain.
Then, of course, there was the weather — at noon the sun was a remote white disk above the horizon, and the temperature was measured at 20 degrees below zero Celsius, or —4 Fahrenheit.

Presidential elections in Turkmenistan – Looking from a different angle
Ashgabat, 4 February 2012 — The presidential elections in Turkmenistan will take place in less than 10 days from now.
Observers and analysts have raised several objections on the whole process:
All the seven candidates running against President Berdymuhamedov are weak and obscure
There is no opposition candidate
The election manifesto of all candidates looks like a weak carbon copy of Berdymuhamedov’s manifesto
These are sham elections; just a way for the sitting administration to stay in power
Superficially, these look like justifiable objections. Let’s examine them one by one.
