Former Italian PM convicted of murder


A court in Italy has sentenced the former prime minister Giulio Andreotti to 24 years in prison over the 1979 murder of a journalist - overturning a previous ruling. Andreotti, seven times Italy's prime minister, had been cleared by a lower court three years ago.

U.S. policy on assassinations


In 1976, President Ford issued Executive Order 11905 to clarify U.S. foreign intelligence activities. The order was enacted in response to the post-Watergate revelations that the CIA had staged multiple attempts on the life of Cuban President Fidel Castro.

In a section of the order labeled "Restrictions on Intelligence Activities," Ford outlawed political assassination: Section 5(g), entitled "Prohibition on Assassination," states: "No employee of the United States Government shall engage in, or conspire to engage in, political assassination."

First Interview with Saddam Hussein in 12 years


The Egyptian opposition weekly Al-Usbou' published yesterday an interview with Saddam Hussein. According to Al-Usbou', which has a very strong pan-Arab orientation, this was the first interview given by Saddam to any media outlet in the last 12 years.(1) In a lengthy preface to the interview, Sayyid Nassar, the Al-Usbou' journalist who conducted the interview, noted: "not everything a journalist hears is reported, he reports what is allowed and what does not harm the national Arab security. Therefore, I ask the readers forgiveness for not reporting part of the interview."

Israeli Coalition Collapses; Elections Possible


Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's national unity coalition collapsed Wednesday when his Labor partners resigned in a row over funding for Jewish settlements and paved the way for possible early elections. Labor party ministers, including Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, quit the government after last-ditch talks to avert the break-up failed.

Libya cuts links with world


Libya has closed its airports and severed phone links with the outside world in the latest demand for compensation from former colonial power, Italy. People who phoned Libya received a recorded message: "As part of the mourning over the victims of the savage crimes committed by the Italian fascists against the Libyan people, all international telecommunications are to be halted today."

Iraq kicks out journalists for coverage of protests

Iraq 'empties its jails'


Iraqi television has been showing pictures of joyful prisoners leaving jail, shortly after the authorities announced an unprecedented general amnesty. A nationally televised statement from the Revolution Command Council, read by Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf, said the "full and complete and final amnesty" applied to "any Iraqi imprisoned or arrested for political or any other reason".
