Scores Arrested in Anti-Bush Protests in New York
Police arrested more than 125 people on Tuesday as protesters opposed to Bush administration policies marched near the World Trade Center site and blocked streets in the city's financial district on the second day of the Republican political convention.
More than 100 people were put in plastic handcuffs and led to police vans after the War Resisters League began a march from the trade center site -- destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks -- to a planned "die-in" near Madison Square Garden, where Republicans were holding their convention to nominate President Bush to a second term in office.

Inside The Convention: Weird Hats, Bad Fashion
Although it was completely lacking in free drinks, staff photographer Eliot Shepard still braved the bizarre universe occuring within Madison Square Garden. When he wasn't avoiding over-enthused elderly southerners or trying to ignore the strange noises coming from the speakers' podium, Eliot managed to document some of the more, er, sublime moments during the first day of the convention.

Canadian Member of Parliament Carolyn Parrish had said she hated "damned Americans" and called them bastards in the run-up to the Iraq war.
She found a new moniker, idiots, on Wednesday in discussing the planned U.S. missile defense system.
"We are not joining the coalition of the idiots. We are joining the coalition of the wise," the Liberal legislator told a small group of demonstrators.

Time To Get Out The Bush
How do you know it's time for a major change in American leadership?
Let us count the signs
You know it's time for a serious change when the president of the United States actually mutters the infantile, instantly infamous line, "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we," just after finishing phonetically spelling out his name, in his favoritest red crayon, on yet another budget-reaming $417 billion defense-spending bill.

E-Vote Machines: Secret Testing
The three companies that certify the nation's voting technologies operate in secrecy and refuse to discuss flaws in the ATM-like machines to be used by nearly one in three voters in November.
Despite concerns over whether the touch-screen machines can be trusted, the testing companies won't say publicly if they have encountered shoddy workmanship. They say they are committed to secrecy in their contracts with the voting machines' makers -- even though tax money ultimately buys or leases the machines.

Singing Minister Disowns 'Die, Bush' Call
Brazil's culture minister and singing superstar Gilberto Gil is not calling for the death of President Bush, whatever concert-goers might have thought. During "Soy Loco Por Ti America" (I'm Crazy About You, America) -- a song from the 1960s about Latin American dreams of liberation -- the visual display behind the band flashed up an image of the U.S. leader with a noose around his neck and the slogan "Morra, Bush, Morra" (Die, Bush, Die).
