Nach den Vorstellungen des Kreml soll die Parlamentswahl zu einem einzigen Siegeszug von Präsident Putins Partei Einiges Russland werden. Putins Anhängern scheint jedes Mittel recht. In Medien ist schon die Rede von Auswüchsen, wie es sie nicht einmal zu Sowjetzeiten gegeben habe. Unmissverständliche "Wahlempfehlungen" habe es etwa für Staatsangestellte gegeben, denen mit Job- und Wohnungsverlust gedroht worden sei, sollten sie die "falsche" Wahl treffen.

Fraud, intimidation and bribery as Putin prepares for victory
The Kremlin is planning to rig the results of Russia's parliamentary elections on Sunday by forcing millions of public sector workers across the country to vote, the Guardian has learned.
Local administration officials have called in thousands of staff on their day off in an attempt to engineer a massive and inflated victory for President Vladimir Putin and his United Russia party. Voters are being pressured to vote for United Russia or risk losing their jobs, their accommodation or bonuses, the Guardian has been told in numerous interviews with byudzhetniki (public sector workers), students and ordinary citizens.

How to spot someone who's not telling the truth
In a famous fairy story, Pinocchio's nose grew longer when he was telling a lie. Surprisingly, most of us give off signals when we are not being truthful which are just as obvious.
Personnel managers in companies are learning to look for these give-away signs to pick out dishonest employees. They hope to take credit for weeding out a future Nick Leeson, the man blamed for ruining Barings Bank, before their firm suffers a similar fate.

Venezuelas Präsident Hugo Chavez will den Palast des spanischen Königs im Tiefflug überbrausen, titeln am Mittwoch die französischen Zeitungen.
"Wir fliegen mit Fidels Flugzeug los. Es fliegt sehr tief", erzählte Chavez am Dienstag auf einer Pressekonferenz in Paris, wo er sich zu einem offiziellen Besuch aufhält.
"Ich schicke mich zu einem Tiefflug über den Zarzuela-Palast an, in sehr geringer Höhe. Ich hoffe, dass sie uns nicht abschießen", plauschte er unter dem Gelächter im Saal los.

Chavez zum Schweigen aufgefordert
Ganz und gar undiplomatisch ist am Samstag der 17. Iberoamerika-Gipfel in Santiago de Chile zu Ende gegangen. Als Venezuelas Präsident Chavez sich nicht von seinen Hasstiraden gegen den spanischen Ex-Premier Aznar abbringen lassen wollte, fiel ihm Spaniens König Juan Carlos ins Wort und forderte Chavez vor laufender Kamera auf, doch endlich zu schweigen. Sichtlich verärgert verließ der Monarch schließlich die Abschlusssitzung des von einer "Atmosphäre der Differenzen" gekennzeichneten Gipfels.

King Juan Carlos tells Hugo Chávez to shut up during the closure of the Latin American summit
‘Why don’t you shut up!’ The words of King Juan Carlos 1 of Spain to the Venezuelan President, Hugo Chávez, in the closing session of the Latin American summit today.
The Spanish monarch lost his cool when Chávez called the ex Spanish Prime Minister, José María Aznar, a fascist on several occasions. King Juan Carlos then got up and walked out of the session in a gesture without precedent, and just in time to hear the Nicaraguan President, Daniel Ortega, criticising Spanish businesses and the role of Union Fenosa in Nicaragua in particular. The King was to return later, but was not present for the singing of the Chilean hymn which closed the debates.
