Der Vorwurf war heftig: Eine 20-Jährige hatte behauptet, von einem Schwarzen wegen ihres McCain-Autoaufklebers attackiert worden zu sein. Der Fall sorgte landesweit für Aufsehen, der republikanische Präsidentschaftskandidat und seine Vize-Bewerberin Palin drückten der Frau ihr Beileid aus. Nun stellt sich heraus - der Angriff war erfunden.

Hunderttausende demonstrieren gegen Berlusconi
Hunderttausende Italiener sind am Samstag in Rom auf die Straße gegangen, um gegen die Regierung von Silvio Berlusconi zu protestieren. Unter dem Motto "Ein anderes Italien ist möglich" nahmen zwei Demonstrationszüge ihren Weg durch die italienische Hauptstadt und vereinigten sich später zu einer Großkundgebung. "Italien ist besser als die rechte Koalition, die es regiert", rief Oppositionsführer Walter Veltroni der jubelnden Menge auf dem Gelände des Circus Maximus zu.

Palin demands $15m to search her own emails - The cost of transparency
US vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin isn't saying citizens interested in open government can't get access to her emails. She's just saying it will cost a little.
The office of the Alaska governor, which by state law is required to make such messages public, says it could cost more than $15m for anyone conducting an exhaustive search. Even then, Palin - who ran for governor on a platform of running a clean and transparent government - says requests won't be honored until November 17, two weeks after the presidential election is held.

Legislative Panel: Palin Abused Authority
Sarah Palin unlawfully abused her power as governor by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper, the chief investigator of an Alaska legislative panel concluded Friday. The politically charged inquiry imperiled her reputation as a reformer on John McCain's Republican ticket.
Investigator Stephen Branchflower, in a report to a bipartisan panel that looked into the matter, found Palin in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.
