For 17 days, tens of thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in Tahrir Square calling for the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, 30 years in power. They had been acting out of passion for their country and dedication for change. They had protested and waited for a response. The response came in an address from Mubarak to the country and his people. Mubarak would not step down. Then almost miraculously, on the eighteenth day of protests, Vice President Omar Suleiman made a very brief statement on state television. Mubarak had stepped down. Nun also doch: Der Präsident Ägyptens, Husni Mubarak, hat seinen Rücktritt erklärt - das teilte sein Vize Omar Suleiman mit. Die Menschenmasse in Kairo reagiert mit Jubelstürmen.
Kairo - Nach 30 Jahren an der Macht ist der ägyptische Präsident Husni Mubarak zurückgetreten. Die Mitteilung aus dem Präsidentenpalast dazu war kurz und knapp: Der Staatschef habe sich nach den Massenprotesten zu diesem Schritt entschieden, erklärte sein Vize Omar Suleiman. Ein Militärrat werde die Amtsgeschäfte übernehmen.

Bush's Swiss visit off after complaints on torture
Former President George W. Bush has canceled a visit to Switzerland, where he was to address a Jewish charity gala, due to the risk of legal action against him for alleged torture, rights groups said on Saturday.
Bush was to be the keynote speaker at Keren Hayesod's annual dinner on February 12 in Geneva. But pressure has been building on the Swiss government to arrest him and open a criminal investigation if he enters the Alpine country.

Secret correspondence shows British helped Libya secure Megrahi release
Secret documents show that British ministers arranged to meet their Libyan counterparts to give them advice on how Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi could be freed.
The revelation appears to contradict the previous Labour government’s claims that it did not “interfere” in the proceedings, and that the decision to free the convicted terrorist was taken by the Scottish government alone.

Türkei: Lehrer darf nicht über Evolution sprechen
Ob der Mensch vom Affen abstammt, wollte ein Fünftklässler in Ankara von seinem Lehrer wissen. Der erklärte daraufhin die Evolutionstheorie - und handelte sich damit eine Verwarnung von der Schulbehörde ein. Die Lehrergewerkschaft will den Fall vor Gericht bringen.
Was nicht auf dem Lehrplan steht, darüber darf im Unterricht nicht gesprochen werden. Nach dieser Logik hat die türkische Schulbehörde nun einen Grundschullehrer in der Hauptstadt Ankara verwarnt. Er hatte den Schülern einer fünften Klasse die Evolutionstheorie von Charles Darwin erläutert. Daraufhin hatte sich die Mutter eines Jungen beschwert, was zu der Verwarnung führte.

Tunisia gets third leader in 24 hours
The leader of Tunisia's lower house of parliament is temporarily taking charge of the country after the president fled the nation following weeks of protests.
The prime minister, Mohamed Ghannouchi, said yesterday he was taking over as the temporary ruler because the incumbent, Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali, was temporarily unable to fulfil his duties.
