Beer defeats 'bank robber'


POLICE have arrested a bank robbery suspect shortly after he popped into an American Legion two blocks from the scene of the crime for a drink in the US city of Taunton. "He stopped to have a beer after robbing the bank and that's what did him in," Detective Dennis Smith told The Enterprise of Brockton.

Buzz Lightyear catches thief


A shoplifter in Hereford was caught by police with a little help from a talking toy. Shaun Markey, 27, was pursued after stealing a Buzz Lightyear doll from the Woolworths store in the town. He took refuge at a nearby rugby club, but police found him when the toy began to speak.

771 Pounds Of Coke Found On Backyard Boat


Police and federal agents say they seized 771 pounds of cocaine Wednesday from a boat docked in the back yard of a home in a wealthy Broward County neighborhood.

Authorities say the drugs have a street value in the millions of dollars were found in the forward cabin of the 42-foot sport fishing boat "Sea Double."

FBI Arrests Suspect In Detroit Terror Cell


Agents Say Man Was Planning Attacks All Over The World.
Agents arrested the man, who is identified in court documents only as "Abdella," in Greensboro, N.C., on Nov. 5 while waiting to board a bus, WDIV-TV in Detroit reported. He has been charged with supporting terrorists, conspiracy to engage in fraud and misuse of visas.

'Champagne Bandit' Strikes Central Florida Supermarkets


Police are looking for a rather finicky shoplifter: a 300-pound man who apparently likes Moet & Chandon White Star champagne. The man, called the "Champagne Bandit," has stolen $30 bottles of the bubbly from Publix supermarkets along Central Florida's east coast, St. Lucie County Sheriff's office records show.

Thieves take rare Newton book


Thieves have stolen a rare first edition of Isaac Newton's Principia from a library in St Petersberg. Principis or "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" was published in 1687 and is one of the most influential books ever published. In it Newton formulated his three laws of motion and his law of gravity.

Hearst kidnapper caught


THE last Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) fugitive wanted for a deadly 1975 Californian bank robbery has been arrested after 27 years on the run. The arrest in South Africa of the member of the '70s radical group that kidnapped newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst came a day after four former comrades pleaded guilty to murder in the bank robbery.

Suspects billed for having their phones tapped


A German intelligence-gathering operation went spectacularly wrong after bills for phone tapping services were sent to the people being bugged.

About 50 people received the demands in mobile phone invoices. Many of them established that their phones were being tapped because the bills listed calls made to a number which was a recording device used by the intelligence service to monitor conversations.

Man nailed to fence in 'barbaric' attack


Harry McCartan, 23, was set upon by a gang of men at Seymour Hill near Dunmurry at about 0345 GMT on Saturday. His hands were nailed to fence posts in the attack. A police spokesman described the attack as "barbaric and particularly vicious".
