When the police want to know about you, your habits and lifestyle, they do not need to ask friends and relatives. Instead they can find out an enormous amount just by looking at what you do with your mobile phone. Who you call, the text messages you send and receive, where your bills are sent to and the services you have signed up for are proving valuable to police investigations.

Police in Birmingham have launched an investigation after child pornography was found on a DVD disk bought at a Dixons store in the West Midlands. The disk was part of software sold with a £200 CD rewriter.

Kidnapped in Canada: One lawn Santa
Canadian thieves calling themselves Grinch Enterprises kidnapped a Santa Claus figure off an Ontario family's front lawn and are holding the jolly icon for ransom, the owner said Wednesday.
The group -- who have struck at the same family home before and demanded a similar ransom -- want the owners to collect canned goods for a food bank in return for getting their plywood Santa back before Christmas Day, Evelyn Hussey said.

More armed police in London
London to try to stop the growing problem of gun crime. Illegal use of firearms rose by 20% this year compared to 2001. The Metropolitan Police will increase its number of armed vehicles from 12 to 15, and there will be 50 more armed officers.

Baby Crocodiles Stolen, Could Snap Back
Two baby crocodiles have been stolen from a German zoo, prompting police to warn the thief could have snapped up more than he can manage. The rare West African dwarf crocodiles, measuring about 12 inches when young, can grow to nearly six feet, police said.

Burglar outruns cop, steals his police car
A burglary suspect eluded police in northern Indiana by stealing the squad car of one of the officers pursuing him. Police later found the car in the garage of a LaPorte County home, but there was no one in the house. "We're just trying to regroup and find out where this guy went," said Police Chief Walter Brath.

Dynamite bananas found behind Brazilian bars
A police investigation was under way on Wednesday after bananas filled with dynamite were found in a routine check of a Brazilian high-security prison.
Police believe the bananas, each filled with 200 grams of explosives, were going to be used in an escape attempt. The stash was found on Tuesday evening in a sewage pipe in the Bangu prison yard.

Queen Latifah Arrested For Alleged Drunken Driving
Hip-hop star and actress Queen Latifah spent part of Wednesday in jail after being charged with driving under the influence in an early morning traffic stop. Latifah, whose real name is Dana Owens, was pulled over by officers at 3:15 a.m., said Officer Alex Delgadillo of the California Highway Patrol.
