Hiker says he stabbed bear in back with ax
Officials closed a backcountry area of Denali National Park after a hiker told rangers he had driven off an attacking grizzly bear by burying his ice ax in the animal's back.
Park Service spokeswoman Kris Fister said Roberto Cataldo, 29, of Modena, Italy, reported the encounter Monday. A roughly 50-square-mile tract that encompasses the area where Cataldo said he had hiked was closed indefinitely.

Australian woman reports freak kangaroo attack
An Australian woman attacked by a drought-crazed kangaroo in the national capital said she was lucky to be alive. In the second attack of its type in a month, Canberra resident Maree Steer suffered deep cuts and bruising after she tried to stop the kangaroo attacking her pet labrador.

Bull Escapes, Leads Police on Wild Chase
A bull broke free from its trailer and led law enforcement officers on a wild chase 80-minute chase. No one was hurt in the pursuit Wednesday when the bull crashed through a chain-link fence, trampled some yards, spooked some residents and plowed into a few cars.

Paris Hilton home burglarized
Police confirmed Friday they were investigating a burglary at the Hollywood Hills home of Paris and Nicky Hilton.
Someone broke into the house Wednesday night, but detectives haven't identified a suspect, Officer Esther Reyes said. She wouldn't comment on what was stolen, citing the ongoing investigation.

Cops Free Chicken From Windshield Wiper
Not only did this chicken not make it across the road, but it wound up in a motorist's windshield wipers.
Yuba City Police Lt. Bill Ollar said a man reported that he was driving along a Highway 99 frontage road Tuesday night when a chicken flew by and became entangled in the wipers.

Prisoner glues hand to his girlfriend
A German prisoner in Madrid and his girlfriend glued their hands together during a jail visit in an attempt to fight the man's possible extradition to Germany, judicial sources said Thursday.
The pair were taken to hospital, where doctors were considering whether to operate or use a powerful solvent to separate the man's left hand from the woman's right.

Witch doctors arrested in raid on fetish shrines
Nigerian police have arrested 30 witch doctors in a raid on fetish shrines in southeast Anambra state where over 50 decomposing bodies and 20 human skulls were discovered, a police spokesman said Thursday.
The heads, genitals and other vital parts of some of the bodies, found in a teak forest in Okija village, had been severed, a sign they may have been killed for ritual.

Spanish thieves who made off with three tons of green peppers hoping to make a healthy profit, might instead get a bad case of indigestion: the vegetables are toxic.
A farmer in the southern region of Andalusia whose field was raided by the thieves warned the peppers had been treated with a pesticide whose effects will not wear off for at least another week.

Nazi salute dog owner's sentence upheld
An appeals court in Germany has upheld a 13-month sentence given to a man who taught his dog to perform a Nazi salute.
Roland Thein was given a suspended sentence by a Berlin court earlier this year after finding him guilty of displaying Nazi symbols and insulting a police officer.

Zwei Jugendliche sind in Graz am Sonntag mit "auffrisierten" Mopeds vor der Polizei geflüchtet. Nach einem Sturz war die Flucht schließlich zu Ende. Auf dem Prüfstand brachten es die "heißen Öfen" auf 106 bzw. 161 km/h - erlaubt sind 45 km/h.

Accused of Molesting Girl
Gene therapy pioneer Dr. William French Anderson was arrested Friday on charges he sexually molested a girl he had coached in karate, authorities said.
Anderson, 67, an internationally prominent University of Southern California scientist, was arrested at his San Marino home one day after prosecutors filed a criminal complaint, said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
