The story of the first photos from Chernobyl

It was a weekend. Everyone was relaxing, or preparing for the 1 May parade, when the power station was meant to receive the Order of Lenin and become a Hero of Socialist Labour.

There were rumours of a minor accident at the station, but I cleaned the windows of our flat in Pripyat as usual. Then at about 9am I was summoned urgently to the station.

No-one believed that something so awful could occur.

Gorgeous Photos

Self-explanatory. A large group of photos of truly dazzling quality. Don't look Photoshopped to me, but perhaps others may think otherwise. I prefer to believe stuff like this can still be found naturally...

Color photo of Tzar Russia 1910

First color photo in the history?

Color photography was explored throughout the 1800s. Initial experiments in color could not fix the photograph and prevent the color from fading. The first permanent color photo was taken in 1861 by the physicist James Clerk Maxwell.

The highest railway in the world

The pan-Himalayan line climbs 5 072m (16 640ft) above sea level and runs across Tibet's snow-covered plateau, providing a controversial link between Beijing and Lhasa. The photography below is some of the first to be seen of this railway, which was completed in October, 2005.

HDR Tutorial: How to create ‘High Dynamic Range’ Images Using Photmatrix

HDR means ‘High Dynamic Range’. Using software like Photomatix you can create images with a more detail in the highlights and shadows than you can with a normal photo from todays digital cameras. Its similar to the old technique of exposure blending. Taking one photo for the sky and one for the ground, then merging them both together in Photoshop. HDR takes it a step further by increase the amount of detail in the image and allows you to create some unique photos. You can use it carefully to create natural looking photos or you can use it creatively to create atmospheric and emotive photos. The choice is yours as to how you process the end result.

BLAST

When a demolition crew set off an explosion to bring down an old highway bridge on the Mississippi River, newspaper photographer Don Frazier was so close that his hair stood on end. His digital camera, positioned on a tripod at an even closer point to remotely capture the event, fared much worse. It was blown to bits.
