20 Historic Black and White Photos Colorized

One of the greatest facets of reddit are the thriving subreddits, niche communities of people who share a passion for a specific topic. One of the Sifter’s personal favourites is r/ColorizedHistory. The major contributors are a mix of professional and amateur colorizers that bring historic photos to life through color. All of them are highly skilled digital artists that use a combination of historical reference material and a natural eye for colour.

A Psychedelic Movie Made With Soy Sauce

In the hands of most amateur chefs a bottle of soy sauce will inevitably lead to an overly salty stir fry, but when paired with Ruslan Khasanov’s eye for the abstract it becomes an artistic muse. In his latest short film, Pacific Light, he transforms soy sauce, soap, oil, ink, and a little gasoline into an explosion of color and movement.

Gigapixel Camera Catches the Small Details

David Brady, an engineer at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and his colleagues are developing the AWARE-2 camera with funding from the United States Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (abstract). The camera's earliest use will probably be in automated military surveillance systems, but its creators hope eventually to make the technology available to researchers, media companies and consumers. ... AWARE-2 sidesteps the size issue by using 98 microcameras, each with a 14-megapixel sensor, grouped around a shared spherical lens. Together, they take in a field of view 120 degrees wide and 50 degrees tall. With all the packaging, data-processing electronics and cooling systems, the entire camera is about 0.75 by 0.75 by 0.5 metres in volume. The current version of the camera can take images of about one gigapixel; by adding more microcameras, the researchers expect eventually to reach about 50 gigapixels. Each microcamera runs autofocus and exposure algorithms independently, so that every part of the image — near or far, bright or dark — is visible in the final result. Image processing is used to stitch together the 98 sub-images into a single large one at the rate of three frames per minute

Canon seeks full automation in camera production

Canon Inc. is moving toward fully automating digital camera production in an effort to cut costs — a key change being played out across Japan, a world leader in robotics.

If successful, counting on machines can help preserve this nation's technological power — not the stereotype of machines snatching assembly line jobs from workers, Jun Misumi — company spokesman, said Monday.

The move toward machine-only production will likely be completed in the next few years, perhaps as soon as 2015, said Misumi, although he declined to give specific dates.

A Cardboard Camera, for IKEA, by Teenage Engineering

The folks at Teenage Engineering have teamed up with another Swedish-bred design house, IKEA, to construct about the simplest digital camera imaginable. I love their cheeky suggestions of features. This being Motion, one has to wonder – what would the simplest possible video camera look like? Jesper Kouthoofd, designer at TE, deserves credit for this one (and a sense of humor).

Photographers, You're Being Replaced By Software

CGI software, even open-source software like Blender, continues to improve in quality, speed and ease-of-use. Photographer Mark Meyer wonders how long it will be before large segments of the photography industry are replaced by software and become the latest casualty to fall to outsourcing. Some imagery once the domain of photographers has already moved to CGI. Is any segment of the photography market safe? Will we soon accept digital renderings in places where we used to expect photographs?
