Dutch flower designer Peter Van de Werken created this multi-coloured effect by injecting vegetable dye into flower stalks. The pigment is absorbed and travels to the petals where it changes their hue.

Six-metre-tall cake made for New Year


Pastry cooks prepare a twenty-tiered cake as part a celebration of the New Year on a squre in Wuhu, east China's Anhui Province January 3, 2007. The six-metre-tall cake was made with 11,280 eggs, 610 kilos of milk, 175 kilos of flour and 216 kilos of oil, and was decorated with 9,999 roses.

Momofuku Ando, Japanese inventor of instant noodles, dies at 96


Faced with food shortages in post World War II Japan, Ando developed the idea that a quality, convenient noodle product would help feed the masses. He founded Nissin in 1948.

In 1958, "Chicken Ramen," the first instant noodle product, was introduced after many trials. Following its success, the company continued to add innovative products, including "Cup Noodle" in 1971.

Man survived 24 days on mountain by sipping barbecue sauce


A civil servant recovering in hospital from an ordeal in which he was stranded for 24 days on a mountain here said he survived by sipping barbecue sauce and water from a bottle.

The rescued man, Mitsutaka Uchikoshi, 35, reportedly told his boss who visited him in hospital that the water and sauce had prevented him from starving to death. At the time of his discovery at the end of October, he was barely conscious, and he is still in hospital, but is reportedly making a good recovery.

Germans to pay by fingerprint at supermarkets


Customers of a German supermarket chain will soon be able to pay for their shopping by placing their finger on a scanner at the check-out, saving up to 40 seconds spent scrabbling for coins or cards, bosses say.

An Edeka store in the south-west German town of Ruelzheim has piloted the technology since November and now the company plans to equip its stores across the region.
