Deputy Fired After Hitting, Killing Bear With Cruiser
A Lake County deputy was fired Monday after he hit and killed a Florida black bear with his patrol car on State Road 19 north of Altoona. This was an accident and not an unusual one. Twenty-four Florida black bears have been hit and killed in the area this year alone. The real problem here is the deputy's speed before this crash and his speed in another incident.

Thailand Opens First Hospital for Monkeys
It was a busy day at Thailand's first monkey hospital, which opened Wednesday in Lopburi, 70 miles north of Bangkok.
The 2,000 monkeys roaming free in central Lopburi are the city's main tourist attraction. A feast held for them each November brings thousands of visitors.

For 23 years, Dennis Hope, 55, of Gardnerville, Nev., has operated a business selling people "official" title to land on the moon, Mars and Venus for about $20 an acre. Although others are in the same business, Hope told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in September that he has earned $6.5 million during that period.

Bad Radar Prompts White House Evacuation
Air Force fighter jets were scrambled and the White House was briefly evacuated on Thursday after birds or possibly disturbances in the atmosphere tripped radar that keeps watch on restricted air space around the complex.

Parts of White House Evacuated
At least parts of the White House were evacuated Thursday after a plane flew within five miles of restricted airspace around the complex, officials said.
"It's heading southeast away from the White House and the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) is attempting to communicate with it," Secret Service spokeswoman Jean Mitchell said.

Online Paid Content Report: Ten Percent of All U.S. Internet Users to Pay for Content Online in 2002
This according to a new report on the online content market by eMarketer, the "meta-market research" company. eMarketer projects that 15.7 million US consumers will purchase online content--excluding porn and gambling--by the end of 2002, and that the number will rise to 21 million in 2003. This constitutes 10 percent of all US internet users this year, which will rise to 13 percent by next year.

Seventeen die in Luxembourg crash
A plane has crashed in fog near Luxembourg airport, killing 17 of the 22 people onboard. The Luxair turboprop Fokker 50 was flying from Berlin. Four survivors have been taken to hospital. The pilot is being pulled from the wreckage and is expected to survive.
