Douglas Adams was RIGHT! TINY ALIENS invaded Earth, say boffins
Aliens rained down on Earth from space, sprinkling microbes on our once lifeless planet, according to boffins from the University of Sheffield.
And the scientists claim they managed to photograph one of the extraterrestrial blighters from a balloon.
The balloon was launched to a height of 27km, which the eggheads argue puts it above the usual height of any terrestrial microbes floating around the atmosphere.

With $7.17 Billion Nokia Buy, Microsoft Brings Its Trojan Horse Home
Microsoft is paying about $5 billion to buy a majority of Nokia’s cellphone business, while shelling out another $2.17 billion to license the struggling Finnish company’s patent portfolio. And none of this should surprise you.
With this $7.17 billion play, Microsoft has redoubled its efforts to compete with Apple and Google in the smartphone game, nabbing a handset maker that can more closely combine its Windows Phone operating system with the hardware that runs it, and expanding an already massive smartphone-related patent portfolio that can jockey with rivals in other ways. But it has also bought itself the new CEO it so dearly needs: Stephen Elop, the former head of Microsoft’s business division who left Redmond in September 2010 for the top post at Nokia.

We Are Anonymous: Inside the Hacker World of Lulzsec, Anonymous and the Global Cyber Insurgency by Parmy Olson – review
It is perhaps a little hard to remember now, but in 2010, there seemed to be a new global superpower. A superpower that acted in unorthodox ways, which was unaccountable and yet of the people, and that was above all nameless, faceless and, as it styled itself, Anonymous.
Born of the internet, it acted most decisively and effectively when it was the internet itself that was threatened. One of its earliest, most successful operations came a matter of days after WikiLeaks published the embassy cables and found its source of funding cut off after PayPal, Visa and Mastercard refused to take donations on its behalf.

Bin Laden raid files purged from Pentagon computers, sent to CIA
The nation's top special operations commander ordered military files about the Navy SEAL raid on Usama bin Laden's hideout to be purged from Defense Department computers and sent to the CIA, where they could be more easily shielded from ever being made public.
The secret move, described briefly in a draft report by the Pentagon's inspector general, set off no alarms within the Obama administration even though it appears to have sidestepped federal rules and perhaps also the Freedom of Information Act.

'Go home and lie', court tells lesbian Iranian
A German court told a lesbian who had fled persecution in Iran, to go back and simply live discreetly and hide her sexuality. Iranian courts sentence lesbians to whippings and, in a fourth instance, death.
Samira Ghorbani Danesh fled Iran in 2009 and has been living in a women's shelter in northern Bavaria since.
She now has until the end of July to leave, Die Welt newspaper said on Thursday as the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees refused the 24-year-old asylum

WikiLeaks Tightens Ties To Anonymous In Leak Of Stratfor Emails
The leaderless collective Anonymous once acted as WikiLeaks’ vigilante avenger, attacking the secret-spilling group’s enemies while WikiLeaks kept a careful remove from their offensives. But with the leak of a vast trove of emails from the private intelligence firm Stratfor, Anonymous now says it’s upgraded its relationship with WikiLeaks from friendly acquaintance to partner.
On Sunday night, WikiLeaks announced the initial release of what it’s calling the Global Intelligence Files, a collection of 5.5 million emails from the private intelligence firm Stratfor. The group claims those emails, to be released over the coming weeks, show Stratfor’s involvement in operations like monitoring activists seeking redress for the Bhopal chemical disaster on behalf of Dow Chemical, payments to the former head of the controversial Pakistani secret service, and even the use of the company’s information for insider trading.

Nigeria on alert as Shell announces worst oil spill in a decade
The oil company says up to 40,000 barrels of crude oil was spilled 75 miles off the coast of the Niger delta
Nigerian coastal and fishing communities were on Thursday put on alert after Shell admitted to an oil spill that is likely to be the worst in the area for a decade, according to government officials..
The company said up to 40,000 barrels of crude oil was spilled on Wednesday while it was transferred from a floating oil platform to a tanker 75 miles off the coast of the Niger delta.
All production from the Bonga field, which produces around 200,000 barrels a day, was last night suspended. "Early indications show that less than 40,000 barrels of oil have leaked in total. Spill response procedures have been initiated and emergency control and spill risk procedures are up and running," said Tony Okonedo, a Shell Nigeria spokesman.

28C3: Behind Enemy Lines
The Event
The 28th Chaos Communication Congress (28C3) is a annual four-day conference on technology, society and utopia. The Congress offers lectures and workshops on a multitude of topics including (but not limited to) information technology and generally a critical-creative attitude towards technology and the discussion about the effects of technological advances on society.
For 28 years, the congress is organized by the community and appreciates all kinds of participation. You are encouraged to contribute by volunteering, setting up and attending hands-on events or presenting your own projects to fellow hackers.
Some basic survival guidelines might come in handy for everything not answered in our 28C3 FAQ. Like last year we search for helpers in our distributed congress program, no nerd left behind. Updated information are covered by the CCC Events Blog or via Twitter (@CCC).
