Cell phone sleuths help find snowbound family
Technology, some lucky text messages and an outdoorsman's intuition helped locate three members of a family stranded in the Oregon backcountry for nine days.
Searchers rescued Kati Kim, 30, of San Francisco and her daughters Penelope, 4, and Sabine, 7 months, along a remote forest road Monday afternoon. The key to finding them, police said, was a "ping" from one of the family's cell phones that helped narrow down their location.

A kite to pull a cargo ship
It won't replace propellers, but an oversize paraglider-shaped kite could help cut fuel costs for ocean-going vessels as it also reduces their emissions. The airborne gear, from a Hamburg, Germany-based company called SkySails, has been tested on smaller ships over several years and now is being fitted for a cargo ship from Beluga Shipping, headquartered in nearby Bremen. The maiden voyage for the 130-meter MV Beluga SkySails is expected in 2007.

Mom, daughters found; dad still missing
A private rescue helicopter today plucked a California woman and her two young daughters from a snowy mountain road where they were stranded for nine days, spurring a frantic search into the night for her husband.
Kati Kim and her two daughters were in good condition, smiling and waving when they arrived at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

Air, ground search for missing CNET editor continues
Update-12/4/06 Kati Kim and her two girls have been found. The search for missing CNET senior editor James Kim continued Sunday, with search-and-rescue teams from the ground and air checking secondary rural routes in southwest Oregon, Oregon police said.
Helicopter support was to be discontinued at darkness Sunday, but ground search crews were prepared to continue searching into the evening, according to a police statement.

Humpback whales have "human" brain cells: study
Humpback whales have a type of brain cell seen only in humans, the great apes, and other cetaceans such as dolphins, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
This might mean such whales are more intelligent than they have been given credit for, and suggests the basis for complex brains either evolved more than once, or has gone unused by most species of animals, the researchers said.

Firefox Cookies
I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving Day weekend! I thought I'd try out a couple more cookie techniques this weekend, since I had a couple of days more time than usual. Interestingly, one of them wasn't nearly as successful as I had hoped, and the other was far more successful than I expected. Fortunately, with that switch-up going on, these Firefox cookies really ended up looking much better than I had hoped.
