Kathmandu: A Nepalese Sherpa has broken the speed record for climbing Mount Everest by more than two hours, reaching the summit just over eight hours after leaving base camp, officials said today.

"Killer-Schwäne" töteten Hunde
Vor 'Killer-Schwänen' warnt die Bezirksverwaltung von Mansfield (Mittelengland), nachdem zwei Hunde angegriffen und getötet wurden. Einer der Hunde schwamm in einem See und wurde bei einer Attacke eines männlichen Schwans ertränkt.

Elefanten-Überfall
Nach der Tötung eines Herdenmitgliedes haben Elefanten in Bangladesch ein Dorf verwüstet und fast 1.000 Bewohner in die Flucht geschlagen.
Wilderer hätten zuvor das junge Tier getötet und seine wertvollen Stoßzähne abgesägt, sagte ein Wildhüter am Sonntag. Daraufhin stürmten etwa 20 Elefanten das Dorf, rissen Bäume aus und zerstörten fast 50 Strohhütten.

820-Gramm-Morchel
In den französischen Alpen hat ein Pilzsammler eine 820 Gramm schwere Morchel entdeckt.
„Ich habe die Morchel in 1.200 Meter Höhe gefunden“, erzählte Andre Aury am Freitag. „Ich werde sie trocknen, in Stücke schneiden und mit meinen Freunden teilen.“·
Der Morchel-Spezialist Barth Buyck vom Pariser Museum für Naturkunde erklärte, es handle sich um einen „Rekord“.

Monkeys, farmers in battle over bamboo territory
The conflict has broken out in Jing county, where rural families living on some of China's most suitable soil for bamboo have seen unusually fierce assaults from roving bands of monkeys this spring, the Xinhua news agency said.

Old fish in captivity turns 65

On Tuesday, aquarium officials at the Steinhart Aquarium honored an Australian lungfish, aptly named Methuselah after the Old Testament's millennia-old character. Methuselah arrived at the aquarium in 1938 as a fully grown adult.

Beauty spot is Italy nuclear dump
The Italian Government has selected a town in an area of outstanding natural beauty as the site for an underground nuclear waste dump. The small coastal town of Scanzano is in the extreme south of Italy. Experts say the waste will remain radioactive for up to a 150,000 years.
